I feel like I'm in a rapidly imploding group here as an average 18-22% tipper.
What % of your tables are leaving nothing or next to nothing, ie <5%?

Depends what kind of restaurant you work in. In a respectable restaurant, <1% will tip 5% or less. If you work at a chain restaurant or something low quality, I'd imagine it would be around 5-10%

When I was bartending in college, I was pretty much always tipped and rather adequately at that.
I served a number of African-American bar patrons and, truthfully, was only tipped by a few of them.

Damn, do y'all still think that receipt was real?
Have y'all never heard the name Brannigan before?
Tip: search google for "Futurama Brannigan"

When serving, I was happy if my tips were about 15% of total sales. 10% behind the bar.
Unfortunately, the general stereotype that blacks tipped poorly was true. Not always, mind you, especially with upper-class or older couples...but if some young, 'urban' looking folks sat down, 10% was gravy.

I tip based on service.
If You suck, I don't feel the requirement to tip just because your job pay situation is shitty, get a new job or get better at your current one. I will tip above and beyond if you go above and beyond and for a normal amount of service I will tip the usual 20-30 percent

And what kind of establishments are you eating at where this is some big issue for you? How often does it happen?
It's been at least 5 years since I've had a bad waitstaff experience.

Im just not good at tipping, Im a 5$ guy. My wife is better at tipping. With me if you are good the max I will leave is 5, if you are bad 1 or 2 bucks.

Unless my service is atrocious, I will tip 15%. Usually more around 20-25%. I've never not left a tip.

A lot of kids are waiting tables to work their way through college years- I tip 20% and consider I am investing in their future and saying thank you for having a work ethic instead of living off of the government

I sure hope you only eat at Chilis, Apple B's, and TGIFridays with the rest of your kind.

I am pretty much a 20% person. You'd have to have a rare combination of shitty service and terrible food for me to not tip or tip anything less.

I do 20%, it actually comes out to a little more cause I don't take out tax before figuring.

There are times you go above twenty percent. My son and I have a beer and burger every week. It's our little ritual. We go to a place with a patio. Rain shine or freezing, we sit on the patio. In foul weather, we are the only ones out there, and the poor little waitress is really cold in her cheerleader uniform. I tip as much as fifty percent. It's worth it to continue the father-son ritual, and it acknowledges that I am asking for special service.
