I've always been partial to the term, "she's a salty old broad."

In the USMC salty was from WWII the Marines that had been in country (especially combat zones) cammies would turn a lighter shade of green from the salt in their sweat. That's where we got salty from. Typically, we only use salty for people who have been on deployments mainly combat ones.

To me "salty" is an old man who can kick your arse (and do other ultra-manly things despite his age.)

I was once called an old salt because I saw clouds and said, "Aye mateys, there's a storm a brewing."

someone explain the term "salty" to me

Salt: sodium chloride
Example:
I'm eating some good mini pretzel twists, but the boiled crawfish that I ate last night had had to much sodium chloride in them. So I'll probably have the flying shits later.

From the movie "Full Metal Jacket".

Joker:

Graduation is only a few days away and
the recruits of platoon thirty-ninety-two are salty.
They are ready to eat their own guts and ask
for seconds.

Used in the Navy as a compliment...Salty referring to time at sea versus reserves who don't know the difference between boats and ships
