Ryan Anderson, Backup Center

Why are so many down on Anderson this year? Some of it is the less reliable than usual 3 point shot, but most of it is his horrible defense. Why does his defense seem so much worse this year? 2 years ago Robin Lopez was the big he played the most minutes with by a large margin. Last year he missed most of the season.
Anderson's minutes this season with:
AD 790:04
Asik 387:25
Ajinca 274:23
Cunningham 559:55
I'm pulling this from the lineup data at Basketball Reference LINK / Some of that time with Cunningham is DC at SF, but only about 103 minutes looking for 5 man lineups with them and Asik/Ajinca. It's also impossible to tell when AD is playing center and when Anderson is, but Anderson gets 661 minutes with a true center and 1246 next to a PF (AD or DC).
So twice as many minutes where Anderson is the "bigger" post defender. The stats say Anderson and Asik have been a horrible 2 man combo (-11.7 pts per 100 possesions vs +6.2 for Ryno/AD), but it really seems like Anderson being misused at "center" is one of the bigger problems we've had this season. Something needs to change.

He needs to go imo. It's been said before that since he and AD play the same position, your not maximizing your roster by having he or a C you're gonna be paying 8+ mil a year on your bench in the 4th.

That's the issue with ryno being a 4, your franchise star plays the same position.

Monty needs to quit playing him 9+ minutes in the 4th quarter

What do you guys have in mind for a backup 4 if ryno is gone?
Some FAs:
Bass
Boozer
Amir Johnson
Ed Davis
T-Rob

Cunningham can get the back up 4 minutes if you're able to move Ryno for a SF.

Depends if we decide to retain him or not.
I really like DC but he could pull a morrow.

The Asik data is tricky because much of that time has been with the likes of Rivers/Jimmer/Salmons. Be very curious to see Cole, Q, Evans with those 2.
Another thing this board ignores and MM brought up is that Anderson had limited physical activity for about 9 months. There's no way he's in shape. Hopefully he can spend the summer getting back to where he was, but he had taken 2000 NBA 3PA before this season; he didn't just forget how to shoot.
IMO 2 ways to fix the center issue:
Davis has to guard 5s with Anderson. They play about 15MPG together. Depending on matchups, that's not untenable. Also depending on matchups, they need to play Asik more
Change the scheme so Davis stays in the paint more frequently so that Anderson isn't holding down the fort and stop having Anderson hedge. Why leave your worst rim protector and rebounder as the last line of defense? Why intentionally ask a slow footed defender to move in space 20 feet from the rim?

What about the 2nd quarter when the Pels play their best?

I like Ed Davis, but I think if Ryno's away splits were the same as his home splits, people wouldn't be hating on him. His terrible defense would be off set by his great offense.
Home: 17.2 pts
Away: 12.2 pts
Home: 45.5% fg
Away: 36.0% fg
Home: 42.0% 3pt
Away: 26.9% 3pt
I have no idea why his splits vary so much, maybe he should only play in home games

Asik needs to be on the court in the 4th not Ryan

I still think Anderson for Tristian Thompson is a fair and good deal for us
We do need a back up 4 who can play some center and is defensive ninded and gets ALOT of rebounds

I dont see how this helps us especially if you resign Asik. TT is going to be a FA and will be looking for 10+ mil a year which means either he or Asik will be on the bench in the 4th. I'd rather trade Ryno for a capable SF and resign DC or sign an Ed Davis for a fraction of the cost of TT.

i don't think Tristian will be getting 10 million next year, if so then yea I do not want him
IMO I rather sign and trade Asik for someone like Drummond and have a tristian Thompson type player as our back up 4/5
Pretty much find that Taj Gibson role, it will allow our center to be more aggressive and not worry about fouls when we have a solid 4/5 on the bench

Thinking Drummond is leaving Detroit anytime soon.

I could see this as a viable option
Trade Ryno for a small forward, maybe khris middleton if the Bucks would go for it, I remember reading an article recently on how high they are on him so they might not go for it but with Dudley possibly leaving they could be in the market for a stretch big man to put next to Henson and antentekoumpo.
Then we would just resign Dante and Babbitt and play babbit off the bench as a average mans Anderson depending the match up
That would give us a rotation of
Jrue
Gordon
Middleton
AD
Asik (assuming we resign)
Tyreke
Cole
Quincy
Dante
Ajinca
Babbit
Thoughts?
Edit: could this even work salary cap wise?

I don't mind Ed Davis in this role. I think he could be had for the MLE and could play the 4 or 5.

All of this could be solved if Anderson could work on his perimeter defense and play the 3
Babbit isnt great at perimeter defense but atleast he is quick enough to sorta keep up with some athletic 3's
