I agree that would be closer. But I felt less interesting. I wanted to know what fans thought about how essential these guys are. If rank it this way:
Dunn
Wilson
Patrick
Cameron
Dunn
Wilson
Patrick
Cameron

My thoughts are the stature of the baseball and football programs are very different. Both of those head coaches also won NCs without the assistants on the list. If one of those were to leave the programs are positioned to still bring in talent and a comparable replacement, even if the replacement isn't quite on the same level as the one that left. There may be a hit if they left, but the programs could survive.
Basketball on the other hand...much has been made about Jones' relative coaching ability. And would the program, or could the program, be bringing in Simmons type talent without Patrick?

But would the results be different? I think more so with baseball. No way we would have the pitchers or their ability to execute without Dunn. And the last 2 years we almost completely relied on it. Blame the bats or whoever but that's it.
Basketball hasn't made the tourny in how long? If they didn't have Patrick, that wouldn't be any different. And we can make predictions about next year but what's that worth? I would say that without Dunn, no way LSU gets a regional host much less a national seed. Hell, I'd bet they wouldn't even make the tournament without him 2 of those years.

They wouldn't be as close to making it as they are right now...
I mean you're comparing apples to oranges when comparing Dunn to Patrick.
Dunn was brought into a coaching staff under an established HC to fix an issue.
Patrick was brought in as part of the new regime in hoops.
They're a toss up to me.

And I think that's a fair point. It's why I started this. I think it's a good debate. Talking about how important and great coaches are instead of bashing is a nice change of pace sometimes

Maybe someone who follows basketball more closely can answer for sure, but I was under the impression Patrick played a key role in getting Mickey and Martin also. Without them this year we aren't even in the bubble discussion. Without Patrick we definitely don't have Simmons and who ever else he brings with him, which at worst should put us back in the same position next year. It isn't Kentucky level success but it is better than what we usually have and it is building some excitement and support for the program.
As for Dunn, I'm not saying he isn't great at what he does. I'm saying baseball would have someone comparable to him if it wasn't him. There are a bunch of tiers/levels of coaches between Dunn and the type of coach it would have taken for LSU to not even make the tournament in those years. I don't think it is realistic to assume LSU would have hired at the bottom of the list immediately after firing someone from the same position.
What the discussion comes down to is this: What is more likely to happen if both coaches left tomorrow? LSU baseball hiring one of the top pitching coaches in college baseball? Or LSU basketball hiring an assistant that will bring elite level talent to Baton Rouge (two top 20 players in one class, #1 in the class, etc)?

More good points. But you're putting a lot of focus on recruiting whereas I'm looking closer at results. I dont know if Patrick brought in Mickey and Martin either. That's a key point but if we didn't have them, you're assuming we get lower tier players. Okay. But we're still out of the tourney last year and who knows where we end up this year with them. And next year is speculation. I guess it's tough for me to give him so much credit when most of what he's done is for the future and there's no way to quantify it yet.

Dunn. Pitching is the most important thing in baseball. If you can't pitch you won't do much in baseball.
Wilson is big for recruiting which is very important
Cameron we don't need much offense to be successful.
I think we could survive without Wilson or Cameron but if we to lose Dunn we would take a big step back. Even though I'm sure CPM would find a good assistant.

My pick on which associate/assistant is the most important to HER team!
Jill Lytle Wilson with the LSU Volleyball moves into her first season as associate head coach and seventh overall season on the LSU volleyball staff. She will continue to serve as the program's recruiting coordinator in addition to training the team’s defense.
Winner!

Patrick then Dunn is how I'd rank them.
