Shot in the dark, but you never know. I'm trying to find someone who works on MRIs that will allow me to pick their brain a little.

If your after technical info, I was in medical physics, involved almost entirely with MRI, intimately familiar with GE 1.5 and 3T through the 12.x platform, and I know a lot of the service people.

I'm trying to get my foot in the door and looking for pointers. Work in biomed and only went into biomed because my goal is to work on CT, MRI, and PET. Obviously, everyone wants experience however you can't touch these without experience. How does one get started?
I'm reaching out to local 3rd party vendors now to see if any of them will do an internship. I'm willing to work for free just to get some training an experience.

I tried to out of college, but since I didn't have any technical service experience like servicing copiers I didn't get the job. I'd worked in a vacuum lab for 5 years and fixed (troubleshot the problem more like it) all sorts of equipment including ion pumps and mass spec units. I was deciding on whether I wanted to go into medical physics (calibrating oncology machines) , but I ended up going EE for grad school instead. I should have presented myself as a better candidate somehow. I'd still do it if it payed well.

I'm a in-house guy. Never have worked for an OEM. I started off as a biomed and then got hired on by the IES guys at my old hospital and went from there. Like everything else, it's all in who you know. I know most all of the imaging guys in Alabama that work in-house and OEM's. We're in a very small field so network as much as possible. If I was going to pick a specialty it would be either MR or Linear Accelerators (mine). And if you are looking at OEM's, personally I would only work for Varian or Siemens. GE and Philips are going through a lot of changes and are beginning to suck. Now, 3rd party people (Crothall, Tri-medx , OSI, etc.) typically pay better as well and like OEM's they will hire guys and send them to schools and foot the bills.

Good to know. I actually just applied for a MR position with Crothall. I personally don't care at this point if I go OEM or 3rd party, just want the experience and training. Once I get some time under my belt, I can make changes if need be.
Unfortunately, I'm in a small hospital so it's unlikely they will go in house for imaging. I did manage to get them to bring anesthesia in house and get training for me and I'm trying to get training on the portable Xray machines by summer.
We have GE and Philips here, I try to talk with their guys when they come in. I'm usually too busy to hang around though.

One of my buddies works for crothall. They pay very well, don't be afraid to ask for stupid money if they ask what you need.

I know a couple of guys that worked for Crothall and they hated the company. However, they are they types that hate everything so I don't put much weight into that. I can deal with some BS to get me where I want to be in my career.

Thanks for the info.
