To be fair, Freauxzen's argument does make sense in that the Cars franchise is the only Pixar film not to address humanity. Bug's life doesn't necessarily show humans, but it does show that it takes place in the human's world. Even if it didn't, bug's are already living, so it could be plausible.

Cars are machines specifically designed by humans and for humans, so the lack of explanation for the lack of humans is naturally a hard concept to grasp.

Why? Who gives a damn if humans exist or not? That's not the point of the movie. It's a children's movie about talking cars. It's only a difficult concept to grasp because Freaux, as much as I respect most of his opinions, is trying hard to find a way to say why he didn't like Cars.

It's absolutely no different from movies like Horton Hears a Who and Brave Little Toaster. Why do those things exist? Why does Horton, an elephant, exist in a plane where Whos exist? Makes no sense, right? It is an assumption that the writers believe the audience can make: these things exist in this world.

Why is it so hard to conceive that cars exist in the world of Cars? Because no humans are around and, therefore, cars should never have been invented? Why are you unable to separate the world we live in from the fantasy world created by Cars? Why is it so difficult to do for you and Freaux that the movie becomes completely unbelievable?

I don't believe for an instant that's why Freauxzen doesn't like Cars and, if it truly is, that's a silly reason to dislike the movie. If he thinks Mater is a cruel joke of a character, playing off the stereotypes of backwoods, bucktoothed hillbillies with so little education they seem to be mentally handicapped and that all this does is reinforce stereotypes in the name of easy jokes, bam, that's an argument. If he thinks the story is uninspired because it is so formulaic that even the thin facade of replacing humans with cars doesn't cover up the fact that we've seen this story 800 times before, bam, that's an argument. If he thinks the main character is a jabbering moron, or the characters in general are nothing but stand ins for 2-Dimensional, overplayed characters that work only because of the easy jokes made about Italians, hillbillies, and fast-talking celebrities, bam, that's an argument.

To say the world doesn't make sense is asinine. Of course it doesn't make sense. It's a fricking movie about talking cars. The same is true about talking bugs. You mean to tell me it's more plausible that a bug can talk than a car? That a tank engine named Thomas can talk, but a car can't? Come on.

I just noted that I can understand the difference in the level of suspension of disbelief, given that any other PIXAR movies either had characters that were already living or shared a world with humans that created them.

I think you addressed the real reasons that I and most others don't view Cars as a terrific film.

Absolutely, I agree, and have argued the exact same things over the years with Freaux and his ilk over this movie. I won't say there aren't legitimate reasons to dislike Cars, but this isn't one of them. Not even close. Because it's disingenuous at best.

To address Teddy Paddilac's criticism from the other thread, Frozen has a much higher critic score than Cars. Although it's score is lower than quite a few others in the bracket, it is a more recent phenomenon and therefore received a higher seed, while being matched up against a pretty fair adversary. I'm predicting it to be upset by Wreck-it-Ralph in round 2.

Crazy that UP didn't make it past the 1st round. I would have switched Monsters and Big Hero 6. But oh well.

Thanks for your work!

I'll go ahead and resubmit my (Herbie) The Love Bug nomination in this thread. That movie spawned 4 sequels and a 5 episode tv series.
