released today. Go get it.

quote:

James McMurtry spins stories with a poet's pen ('Long Island Shores') and a painter's precision ('She Loves Me'). Proof: The acclaimed songwriter's new 'Complicated Game'. McMurtry's first collection in six years spotlights a craftsman in absolutely peak form as he turns from political toward personal ('These Things I've Come to Know, You Got to Me'). 'The lyrical theme is mostly about relationships', McMurtry says. 'It's also a little about the big old world verses the poor little farmer or fisherman. I never make a conscious decision about what to write about.'

'Complicated Game', set for February 24, 2015 release on Complicated Game Records (yes, it's complicated) and produced by CC Adcock and Mike Napolitano, delivers McMurtry's trademark story songs time and again ('Copper Canteen', 'Deaver's Crossing' ). However, the record brings a new (and certainly no less energetic) sonic approach. First, recall blistering beats and gnashing guitars from his magnum opus Just Us Kids (2008). Now, unplug. 'The label head wanted more acoustic,' McMurtry explains. 'We built everything as we went so we ended up with more acoustic guitar as we went. We just played whatever sounded right for a given song, but we weren't necessarily saying this is an acoustic record.'

After first listen, this may be my favorite of his albums yet

If you like songs like Ruby and Carlos, you'll love this album

I like it, perhaps more than the recent REK and Bingham releases.

If Choctaw Bingo is your thing, this probably won't do it for you

I do like Choctaw Bingo and that's what initially brought me to McMurtry. But what I really like is how he tells a story.

I'll listen but he hasn't done anything good in 15 years....I did see him at Whip In in Austin a while back. He was drinking with some friends. There was a singer/ songwriter playing on the little stage and James got up to help him deal with some technical issues. When he walked backed to his table I told him to play a song and he gave me a f*ck you look.

My favorite is album of his is probably "where'd you hide the body". Love Levelland, Ionlanthe, and Down across the Deleware. Other favorites are Hurricane Party and Ruby and Carlos. Will have to give this one a listen. I also like Choctaw Bingo, but prefer Ray Wylie Hubbards cover over the original.

Agreed. I saw him live about a year after he put that out. Pretty much everything he put out in the late 80s early 90s is good....Candyland, Too Long in The Wasteland, even Walk Between the Raindrops is pretty good but that album was when he started going downhill.

Weird, I think his albums have gotten better and better. I love Choldish Things, and more so Just Us Kids.

I think those are boring. I listened to the new one....meh...he's just going through the motions now. He's like the Gourds were the last 6-7 years....forcing it,....writing songs that Gourds fans would like rather than writing from the soul.....my brother has admitted as much to me. Although the new fans seemed to like the new stuff and were barely of aware of the older stuff. So I guess it depends when you started listening.

every time I see him at whip in he's at the end of the bar by himself and looking quite content.

Good to hear his new album is heavy on the storytelling songs.
