We're heading this way soon. I'm looking for some ideas from someone who has been of some of the hidden gems of things to do that not a lot of tourists know about. We enjoy hiking and just getting outside, and we'll have young kids with us. I've been checking out the Hike House and tripadvisor, etc as a start.

we did Sedona last year and loved it. It was really just a stop on the way to Flagstaff where i had work, but i wish we had spent more time there.

I would recommend looking into the hiking excursions before you go. we thought we'd just show up and go, but the timing wasn't right.

Give yourself an opportunity to hit the shopping areas. Lot of weird, but a lot of fun. and i'm a guy who hates shopping.

Obviously, you're not far from Flagstaff and Grand Canyon so if you can accommodate some time to hit those i'd highly recommend it.

ETA: Take the switchbacks, not the interstate if you go from Sedona to Flagstaff.

Tons of amazing places around there. Search rock climbing Sedona, and check out the directions. I'm not telling you to actually climb that soft rock, but the directions to parking and the hikes to the base are exactly what you want. Spires, all sorts of stuff. Start with that google search and look through the photos until you see something you can't live without checking out.

We rented a two seater ATV for a couple hours and that was real nice. They have you a couple maps of different trails and such...it was real cool. LINK

We also enjoyed the Rainbow Trout Farm (catch and release) up on 89A LINK

We did a small winery tour LINK

They have a small brewery LINK

Golf is super nice. ALOT of hiking and climbing and you're only a couple hours drive up to the Grand Canyon

We went there and for whatever reason they were closed that day and i was super disappointed.

We went to Oak Creek Brewery and Grill and it was fantastic. My wife made me have one of every beer.

As others have already mentioned....church in the rock is a must and driving up oak creek canyon from Sedona to Flag is a must. Very scenic drive. At the top is an area with a scenic overlook. Stop there and enjoy the views. If your wife wants some turquoise jewelry she can barter with the Native Americans that set up tables there and sell their stuff. You can find MUCH better prices there than all the ridiculously marked up jewelry you see in the shops.

I go to Sedona a lot, mainly to hike.

Hikes I have done and enjoyed

Boynton Canyon Trail/Boynton Vista trail
Devil's Bridge
Cathedral Rock Trail
Honanki Indian Ruins
Palatki Indian Ruins
Huckaby Trail
Soldier Pass

Here is a great website to find all the info for those hikes

LINK /

Many of these hikes require you purchase a Red Rocks Pass to park at the trailheads. You can purchase them at most gas stations in Sedona or online or at some of the trailheads(you will need cash for that).

If you have kids...take them to Slide Rock....totally touristy but they will love it.

I went to new age shop area and was told I could have a relationship with one of the large crystals out back. I was kicked out after my wife took a video of me dry humping said crystal out back.

Please visit a few of the various vortexes

The vortex people are def interesting But all are usually still very friendly and very helpful if you have questions about Sedona.

Did a hike near a vortex once and heard a flute being played.....some hippie guy had climbed all the way to the top of this rock structure sitting cross legged playing the flute. We passed him by as he was walking down the trail and he handed out heart shaped red rocks to everyone to give us the "positive energy" of the vortex to take home with us

Hiking is a must - beautiful area. Also go to the river and swim, jump off cliffs and slide down rocks - it is a fun time.

I've only seen one rattlesnake while hiking and it wasn't in Sedona.

I did see a herd of javelinas charging through near a trail we were on. Now THAT was scary...they are mean as hell and will frick you up.
