New Orleans folks: What's the best way for an out of town family with young kids to experience Mardi Gras parades in New Orleans? Is there an area with reserved seating where you can buy tickets? Are there areas on the parade route you can rent for a Group? Areas to avoid? I'm looking to take my kids next year and have as little stress as possible (relatively speaking) so any suggestions/advice/links are appreciated.

It's never too early to plan, right?

TIA

Day parades only. Stay as far uptown as possible. Right across from Sacred Heart/Superior Seafood were a lot of kids and a lot police presence. Gotta get there super early though, cause the real estate there goes quick.

Knowing no one in town and with young kids.

Go for the weekend, two weeks before Mardi Gras day.

You could always buy tickets to the grandstands at Gallier Hall. I would suggest checking out St. Stephen's school. You can get parking & bathroom pass there and it's the most family friendly place on the uptown route.

Don't come to New Orleans

If you insist, so like the other poster said and come two weekends early.

Sunday is the best on St Charles for kids. Parades all day will probably wear them out before Bacchus even runs.

hopefully Napoleon will be reopened by 2016. Set up on Napoleon close to St. Charles. Once you turn on St. Charles it can get pretty rowdy.

ETA: on Sunday of course

Tucks Saturday is even better because all the crowds are on the Endymion route.

for a first mardi gras, id recommend staying somewhere close to St Charles between Lee Circle & Poydras.

best spot imo for safety, crowd size, walkability. they have viewing stands but not sure how to access them .

most other places on the route are either unsafe, or you'll be overwhelmed with crowds. It doesnt sound like you are prepared to get out there early and set up ladders and stuff for your kids

come in the Saturday before Mardi Gras, go to City Park and Orleans Ave., park at Delgado, and watch Endymion. Very friendly environment at City Park.

Screw that. I hope it stays like that forever. Having 4 ft of neutral ground was perfect for setting up and not having crowds behind you or in front of you.

I wish it could be that way forever. Besides some dust on my shoes, this was easily my most enjoyable Mardi gras in 30 years on this planet.

Yeah, its fine, but I can't imagine handling young kids out there from 8 am to 10-11 pm. That's a long time. If they catch the Saturday parades uptown which have lighter crowds and the Sunday day parades, they should get their fill of parading and not have to hassle with the night parades.

Thanks to all so far for the advice so far. We're definitely not going to set up ladders or get there at 5 am to rope off an area, but having reasonable comfort and an accessible bathroom is key.

I've done it a few times, but never had a family to consider.

Sacred Heart was charging $5 to access their port-a-lets all day. Not a bad deal at all.
