Anyone own or fished one before?

I'm looking for a decent primary 8 wt. fly rod in the $300 and under range.
I'm looking for something with a little more casting range (or at least a decent quick cast range).
I'm throwing a Cabelas Prestige 9' 8 wt. right now and looking to make that my back up (it's a great beginners rod but doesn't appear to consistently throw as long as I want).

I've read some great reviews about the BVK series ... Appears to be a great rod for the price.
Opinions on it or another suggestion?

I hear good things about the TFO spinning rods. Surely the quality is there in a fly rod.

I have a 5 wt 8.5', it's my trusty backup and what I let friends that don't have fly rods use.

It's a pretty good rod, no real complaints with it. It's caught a lot of fish.

TFO is probably the best for the money. That one has a pretty good action (faster) and should be good for what you're asking about.

Beulah and Douglas are getting a lot of love lately from what I've seen in the "best for the money category." Both are around his price range though I don't think the Beulah rod comes in an 8 wt.

Their return policy is second to none. Doesn't matter how it's broken I'm told.

I've got that rod in 8wt and its awesome, especially for the price Put a line on it that's about a half weight heavy. I have the Orvis bass on mine right now.

As far as distance, I'm not the worlds greatest caster but I can consistently hit 70' with it. I fished with a guide who cast the entire line on it so it's got plenty of oomph.

look at the allen kraken when you decide to get a good reel for it. if you sign up for their emails you'll get a 20% off coupon for your first order.

This is correct, although not uncommon with nicer brands. When I broke my TFO it was only $25 to replace. Winston charged $50, neither asked questions. Since TFO is in dallas, I just went over to their warehouse to have it replaced, no waiting. Very nice staff, they even gave me a free hat.

I have a TFO TiCR 5 weight and it's great- especially for the price. I know nothing about fishing with anything over a 6 weight, but I do know that TFO for that price range is about as good of a value as you can get.

I keep a BVK 8wt as a loaner rod. It's a nice light weight med/fast rod but it doesn't like to load up close. Taking shots at redfish inside of 30 feet it tends to drop flies down like a hammer. However, the rod is awesome for when you need to reach out to 50-60 feet. It's every bit as good as some higher end rods at 60 feet. If you up line it then it will load a little faster but makes accurate shots at distance a little more challenging. Go cast the TFO Mangrove rod, it's a far better quick casting rod. It loads fast and it's nice and delicate up close. If you have to make a longer cast it will do it without too much of a fuss. Not to mention it won't explode into a dozen pieces when your friend high sticks it on a big red like the BVK will.

I am a fan of TFO. I think they make a very good rod at that price point, but at $300 it's close enough to the Orvis Recon line that it might be worth giving the Orivs a swing. The Recon rod in an 8wt is damn close in taper to the Helios 2, in fact I find it to be a little more delicate when making quick shots. I would argue that the Recon rod is almost too good. For $450 you can buy a Recon 8wt from Stillwater and get free SA, Rio or Wulff fly line (about $90 worth of fly line) The Orvis rod also comes with an aluminum rod tube.

BVK- $300, No rod tube, Lifetime replacement, made overseas
Recon- $450, aluminum rod tube, free fly line, 25 year warranty, made in USA

All I have are TFO Lefty Kreh Professional Series fly rods. Best bang for the buck there is.
