A young Russian woman has died after her charging iPhone fell into the bathtub in her Moscow flat. Yevgenia Sviridenko, 24, who was originally from Omsk, more than 2,000 miles from the Russian capital, was discovered by her flatmate in the bath on Monday evening, the Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper reported according to The Moscow Times.

Sviridenko’s housemate, Yaroslav Dubinina, 23, said she went to check on the young woman when she became concerned by how long she had spent in the bathroom. “I walked in and saw her lying there all pale in the water. Her phone was also in the water. I pulled my friend out and noticed that her body was shaking from the shock,” Dubinina was reported as saying.

Sviridenko is believed to have been charging her phone and scrolling through VKontakte, the Russian equivalent of Facebook, shortly before she died.

Hopefully the Russian isn't from Germany

Never met her, but if it is, I'm going to have to plan another trip to Scottsdale soon.

She is shockingly beautiful.

Seriously though, her smile is electric.

I wonder if she posted a picture of her in a bubble bath with wine in hand to VKontakte right before she dropped the phone.

Translate into Russian: "Just relaxing with me, myself, and wine haha!"

Correct me if I'm mistaken.. But an iPhone has a 3.8v battery. This is like having two AA batteries in the tub with you. So it wasn't the batteries that killed her.
What I don't get is, you are not getting line voltage (which I think in Russia is 230V ac 50Hz) (we are 120 Vac 60Hz) to the phone. The phone gets a 3.8 volt charge, also in DC from the adapter. How was the charge enough to kill her.

So how was 3.8 volts enough to kill her?

Second, do they not have Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter outlets there? The US requires them within 6 feet of a water source.

The celebrated monk and religious writer Thomas Merton (The Seven Storey Mountain) died at an ecumenical conference in India when an electric fan fell into his bathwater.

Also there's a great Columbo episode where Martin Landau murders his uncle by dropping an electric mixer into the bath.

I know when I put a 9 volt to my tongue I get a shock, but I don't die. That's more than twice the voltage of the output of the adapter. I would think it was made so an internal fuse would pop before it allowed the amperage possible to hurt somebody.

She was so full of energy. She could light up a room. Watt a tragedy.
