The Mississippi River levees were the worst thing man could have done for our coast.

and it's going to be too late once they finally do something about it. That's the sad part.

Yep. Another 60-80 years if we did everything possible to try and restore it

Not much they can do, and actually get away with. Before, without the levees, much of south LA would flood on a regular basis. If the government modifies the levee system now to save the coast, the floods will wipe out towns and end up costing the government hundreds of billions of dollars in lawsuits for damages "caused by them".

1927 the last thing people cared about was the coast.

Dry Land was a little more important at the time.

As someone uninitiated to thinking ecologically about the impact to controlling rivers, can you lay out the "bad" for me? I would agree with you, but from a position of ignorance. Just wondering what the specific negative impacts actually are.

Sediment is pumped off the continental shelf vs dispersing over the marshes creating new land

So we're losing land due to wind erosion/subsidence/salt water/sea level rise and getting no new soil to replace I t

who the hell downvotes this? he's not advocating putting up the levees. he's expaining the thought process behind their creation almost a century ago.

Well, yea. But they made the land where most people on this message board live inhabitable for the most part 365 days a year.

The guy at Tulane who is an expert on the Mississippi River(can't remember his name), says that the levees should be blown up from Belle Chase south to the Gulf.

Having lived in Morgan City most of my life, I can attest to this. I've hit many a sand bar running the river. The Atchafalaya was once the deepest river in the world.
