“Ultimately we want to see your best teams in the playoffs. And there is an unbalance and a certain unfairness. There is a proposal (from one of the broadcasters)… where the division winners would all automatically go into the playoffs and then you’d seed the next 10 best teams. I think that’s the kind of proposal we need to look at. There are travel issues of course, but in this day in age every team of course has their own plane, travels charter. I don’t think the discussion should end there. And as I’ve said, my first year I was studying a lot of these issues and year 2 is time to take action. It’s something I’m going to look at closely with the competition committee. I do think it’s an area where we need to make a change.”

The owners in the East might well oppose this.

If you used that formula this season there would be two changes: Charlotte and Miami would be out, replaced by New Orleans and Oklahoma City. Meaning the better, more deserving teams would get in. As it should be.

I hadn't heard this format proposal before and it doesn't sound too bad. Division winners getting in automatically makes those rivalries matter more than ever, and it would also keep the playoffs from being too lopsided with one conference while still giving more deserving teams a chance than the current system.

We have watched sub .500 teams make the playoffs in 10 of the last 13 years in the east, while there has never been a sub .500 team, make the west playoffs. Even the three years that a 8th seed in the east had a winning record, the west had a team with better or equal record not make the playoffs.
It's time to make a change. It's not like it's a scenario that has happened a few times now, it's a pattern that can be traced back over a decade.

Adam Silver is going to make this league even more awesome than it already is. Love what he has done for the NBA in just a year.

The good thing is he's looking for ways to make changes that fans want and will grow the game, as opposed to the NFL who is making changes to create legal liability coverage.

So under that format, if the playoffs started today would it be:

#1 GSW v #16 OKC
#2 ATL v #15 NOP
#3 MEM v #14 MIL
#4 HOU v #13 PHX
#5 POR v #12 CHI
#6 TOR v #11 WAS
#7 LAC v #10 CLE
#8 DAL v #9 SAS

Those are the right teams, GSW would be the #1 seed though. actually you have a few of the seedings screwed up.

Also, I wonder if division winners would get home court advantage in the first round or something

True. Hard to make sense of it all without all teams playing the same amount of games.

I can see that being an option. More incentive to win your division. You get in the playoffs and Home Court in the first round.

But then you would have to seed the Division winners and have them play the seeded non-Division winners

That would be an amazing playoff. The only team that I'm not really interested in is Milwaukee, but that's mostly because I haven't watched them much this season.

GSW vs OKC
ATL vs NOP
HOU vs PHX
POR vs CHI
LAC vs CLE

So many good matchups and equally matched teams. The only blowout series I see there would be MEM vs MIL.

Miluakee's been playing really well defensively this season. I would say they could take Memphis to 6 games before Mem won out

Would be an incredible series if the Bucks can keep up the defensive prowess they've shown recently.

It would be very physical, grind-it-out entertainment.

I haven't watched them really, I guess all the matchups would be pretty even if that's the case.

Why would there be an extra round?

I don't get that either

You're still playing with 16 teams.

I still wouldn't mind a 5 game first round. NBA playoffs are too long

He is off to a good start. If he can push this through then he will be the best in sports.
