Am I the only one that is surprised they lasted this long.

The business model of doubling prices on everything and demanding your address and phone number to buy batteries just wasn't cutting it.

Damn, I grew up going to RS. It sucks but they had a shitty business model.

No. I'm shocked they have been able to hang on until now.

Selling cell phones is the only thing that kept them afloat the last few years.

Used to be a really cool store. Now it's 28 bucks for a clunky and inaccurate multimeter with no batteries.

I haven't been in one in years, but I did buy my first laptop computer from a Radio Shack. It had a Cyrix processor. 2 points if you remember that company name.

Ummm....

Under the deal, Standard General would acquire between 1,500 and 2,400 RadioShack stores and partner with wireless operator Sprint Corp. to operate as many as 1,750 of the outlets, RadioShack said Thursday.

Looks like only about 1/4th or so will actually close.

use to be a cell phone rep and they were my account. I had 40 stores and everytime I was in a store I would sit there and wonder, how the frick are they still in business?

I got to know some of the district managers and those poor bastards had to work 6 days a week, 12 hours a day and most worked sundays

one of them told me they got a base of 50k plus bonus. frick that shite

This past black friday I bought a ipod for my son at the Radio Shack on O'neal. They didn't have the cheapest price but for the $10 difference I wasn't going to venture into Walmart or Target. In and out of Radio Shack in the span of a few minutes.

A few years back I went to the radio shack on coursey and Sherwood. Asked if they could make me a lost power cable. The girl looked at me like I was crazy. I told her RS used to do it for me in the early 90's. She looked at me and said she wasn't even born when they made the cables.

I was just telling my wife about this:

Me: "Hey I saw Radio Shack filed bankruptcy today."
Her: "That's crazy, I can't believe they're closing."
Me: "When was the last time you went to a Radio Shack?"
Her: "Oh."

I used to go there weekly, have been 3 times in 2 years and was disappointed 2 out of 3. If the "salespeople" won't get off their devices when you walk in, you know the fat lady is gonna sing soon.

I first learned programming in BASIC on Radio Shack and Tandy brand computers.

Still solid name and goodwill. Surprised they haven't tried to radically overhaul they're offerings, but I'm guessing they will now.

Radioshack is the type of place you go when you're on your way to an important event and a camera battery stops working, or you're out of town in some place with only strip malls and you forget a charger for something.
