waking up early is easy for me, 15 years of shift will do that to you.
When I go to the gym (about 0430) everyone in my house is asleep. I don't have a 3 yr old clinging to me, I don't have to worry about baseball, basketball or soccer practice. Makes me feel good that I have gotten at least one thing accomplished any given day

Question for people who know a ton more about this stuff than myself: is there any discernible difference in working out in the morning vs in the evening?

I read a book (albeit it was quite a while ago) that said first thing in the morning, even before eating, is best because it a)burns more fat (since you don't have many carbs stored up after just waking up, your body will turn to fat next to burn through) and b) keeps your metabolism stoked throughout the day. Soo..whenever I do workout it's always first thing.

Is that a load of BS or is there any merit to it?

personally for me, workouts in the morning are just better.
I tried afternoon workouts but there was always something getting in the way.

I probably read the same book. It makes since since your body is "fasting" mode in the morning until you feed it

Ok cool. I don't like the idea of working out later because after I get off work all I wanna do is relax and just watch TV. But man sometimes getting up an hour or 90 minutes prior to when I "normally" would is tough.

For those of you that have replied to this thread, how many of you have kids?

Kids have destroyed what daily routine I used to have.

Wake up at 5am. Drink a pre workout. Bang my girlfriend for about an hour. Drink a protein shake/post workout. Then go about my day.

Been on that workout routine for about 2 years and I've gotten pretty yoked.

-Night before I pack my gym bag
-Wake up at 5:15, cook & eat breakfast, brush teeth, take pre-workout
-Get to the gym for 6
-Work out til 7-7:10
-Shower at the gym
-Head to work.

The first week or so after converting to a morning workout can be tough, but you'll get used to it. I usually wake up at 5, get to the gym at 5:30 and do 5-10 min of cardio to help get the heart rate up. I find the cardio helps a lot, I'm not big on pre-workout drinks bc I usually crash after they wear off.

There are two camps out there - working out on an empty stomach v. fueling up before a workout. I'm not sure about body building/weight gain situations, but most of the research I've seen touts the benefits of doing early morning cardio on an empty stomach. Personally, I get up 30 minutes before, have a cup of coffee, check emails, work out a shite, and head out on my run. I don't like running on a full stomach.

I have three - that's why I get up early to work out. I'm done and back in the house before they even wake up.

I do not.

I'm actually not even that much of a workout junkie (in probably the skinniest person on this board). But the benefits I feel of waking up and working out at that time make for one hell of a productive day. It takes some getting use to.

4:15 wake up, bag and car already packed from the ngiht before, coffee on the way out the door that I drink on the way to the gym.

1 cup of coffee

Coffee or caffeine pill, a bunch of water through the day and at least 7 hours of sleep...repeat.

I do have one daughter. I take her to school on Mondays and Wednesdays, the wife on Tues, Thurs and Fridays.

On Mondays and Wednesdays I either go to the gym or go for a run and make sure I am home for about 6:15. I maker her breakfast and shower while she eats. Then, after I am dressed I help her get dressed, teeth brushed and out the door by 7 am ish

In general, you're more rested for morning workouts ideally since you are coming off of 7+ hours of resting/sleeping/recovery.

Working out in the afternoon is usually following a full day of work and lord knows what other stresses that were put on the body throughout the day

I lift around noon everyday now, but when I was in college i'd lift at 6:00am.

Woke up, got dressed in 5 mins, took no-xplode on the way there on an empty stomach. First exercise was always a bit rough but then I was good to go.

I stretch for about five minutes and then ride the bike for about ten minutes to get the heart rate up. After that I am up. I haven't been eating before I work out, and I am not sure if I should do that or not. I believe it is a better work out in the morning because I am in a hurry and don't want to be late for work, so I don't take a lot of time between sets.
