The other day, Fast & Furious star Tyrese Gibson created a stir on the Internet by posting some fan art of himself as Green Lantern to Instagram. Today, Tyrese pushed the Green Lantern teases into high gear by posting several more pieces of fan art, while also writing about the importance of potentially playing the character.

In one Instagram post, Tyrese wrote, “Idris fall back I got this! In the brightest day, in the blackest night, No evil shall escape my sight. Let all who worship evil's might, Beware of the power of Green Lantern's light!”

"Why don't we have more black superheroes"....: We have a few.... Now we have one more.... #MAYHEM art by legendary comic book artist @JimLeeArt I sat there and watched him draw this #Mayhem cover.... We're friends to this day..... Potentially doing this #GreenLantern role isn't an opportunity its more like a "responsibility".... Prayers and love will get us there......

I think I like John Stewart more than Hal Jordan anyway.

I'd rather have TG over Elba w/how dismissive he was recently about playing Heimdall. Comic movies don't need leads that take themselves so seriously they see the material as beneath them.

No offense to Tyrese, he seems like a good dude, but I don't think he can carry a superhero movie himself. He just isn't a good actor. Or even decent. At least, I haven't seen anything from him to indicate that he can pull off being the main star in a big blockbuster.

John Stewart is definitely better than Hal, and I agree, I'm not a fan of Gibson as Stewart.

I like Stewart, but Hal Jordan is too fricking awesome to get this crap. The reasons WB would be going with Stewart would be to distance themselves from the RR film (which is why the solo film is the last DC film in the cycle) and to diversify the cast.

GL comics have been the best books of the last decade by DC.

Will he be offended when he finds out they just want him as a guest star on Arrow/Flash/CW?

I personally like Stewart more then Hal as well, but outside of Elba, I do not know any black actors that I think could carry a singular film by themselves.

Maybe Michael Jai White, but I do not think he has the name recognition. You could do Will Smith (I know, but remember, he actually is a pretty good actor when he wants to be), but he is in SS now.

I got nothing. I could see Common playing the role, but only in a supportive role.

Since when do you need to be a good actor to be in a superhero movie?

Don't be that guy.

Superhero movies are becoming their own genre. They are no longer the cliche fest that they use to be.

I love the Stewart character much better. He brings a lot of character to the role. Unfortunately, I can't think of anyone who could pull off the role. It would have to be someone new. But a a stand alone movie, you need someone who could draw a crowd. When they make the JL movie, they could introduce a new character then.

It's a push really, and I like Stewart more, but Hal has been given a bigger chance to affect the DCU on multiple occasions. So it's tough.

With that said, John Stewart on film could be great, but yeah...Tyrese? Just not seeing it.

wtf? they are fictional characters, how can one bring more character to the role.

Are you saying John Stewart is a more morally grounded person than Hal Jordan making him a better Green Lantern?

Are you saying that Stewart character makes for a better movie role? A better fit in the JL?

Personally, the only reason I believe Stewart to be popular is because of the cartoon wanting to diversify its cast so there wasn't an all white JL.

Now that DC got the bright idea to promote Cyborg, Stewart is back to secondary character.

Hell they even brought in Simon Baz as (yet another) Earth GL.

Hal fits better in the JL because he's very different than Superman and Batman.

Lot of DC fans will tell you that the real trinity of DC is Supes,Bats, and GL (Hal) nowadays-especially considering after the New 52 reboot that only Bats and GL kept their current books with the same story.

It also helps that Geoff Johns, DC creative chief, wrote his book for so long.

Which is why this surprises me so much. DC rebooted it's animated series as well, putting the 52 JL in place with Hal back as the main GL.

You'd think WB/DC would synergize across all platforms with their line-ups.

and if we're talking interesting characters, frick go with Guy Gardner. He's fricking awesome.

ETA: if the RR movie hadn't bombed so hard, any non Hal GL wouldn't be up for discussion.

You don't. And I didn't say you did. But Tyrese isn't even a decent actor. He has shown me nothing, that I can remember anyway, that indicates to me he can headline a big blockbuster. He can be a co-star to Vin Diesel, but even Chris Pratt showed flashes of being able to take over scenes in his relatively few movie roles prior to Guardians. Tyrese has shown he can mechanically deliver lines and look good doing it, which isn't enough to carry a movie. Nothing against the guy, but he is a B movie actor at best. If I'm DC, I don't want him headlining one of my major franchises.

I'd rather see Wood Harris or Anthony Mackie or David Oyelowo play Stewart

wat?

Chiwetel Ejiofor, David Oyelowo,Terrence Howard, Jeffrey Wright, Courtney Vance, Wood Harris, Lorenz Tateall, all say hi.

Man I like Elba but holy fricking shite this board has overrated him to the extreme at this point. He is not the end all be all of black actors.
