I'm thinking about when they start driving. They're kids in my kids first grade class with them. That's craziness IMHO.

Whatever age you feel comfortable dropping them off somewhere without your supervision. Example, my kids started going to the movies with their friends and no adults in the 7th-8th grade. We gave them phones so we could reach them to pick them up.

Whenever you need to get in touch with them and they are regularly not in speaking distance. 12-14

Start them with this at age 14, keep them from texting and humble.

I got my first cell phone freshman year of college in 2001. I did not miss out on anything not having it before then. I think college age is appropriate. I don't think a high school kid needs a cell phone.

Whenever they are old enough to start going to movies and other events with their friends but not necessarily under adult supervision.

Yeah, a brand new driver doesn't need a cell phone these days.

I got my daughter a phone at the end of 5th grade year. Not an iPhone or anything, just a phone that has a keyboard for texting. She texts more than talks.

She has rules to follow and of course she has to keep her grades up to keep.

8th or 9th grade is a good time to let your kid have a cell phone.

We got our son one in 8th grade because of sporting activities and my wife having to run two others around. It has restrictions of use and we all agreed that parents can look at the phone at any time.

He's been very responsible with it and hasn't lost the phone or broken it yet.

Do they even still make pagers?

If kids don't have one in 5th or 6th grade they'll be cut out of the loop of communication with teens in their class. Not that it would be a bad thing, necessarily.

Teens use that as their sole communication. They don't even talk; rather, text. Plus, who has landlines? In the absence of a household landline how would they communicate? I surely wouldn't want my kids' friends calling on my cell to speak to them.

But it's not 2001 anymore. I didn't get my first cell phone until I was OUT of college in 2001 as well. However...those were different times.

I'd say it would depend on each child really. Are you and the child's other parent divorced and the child goes from home to home frequently? Child involved in sports, hobbies where you have to frequently drop them off at practice, etc? I'm not saying the child needs the latest, greatest smartphone...but maybe a basic cellphone.
