Thinking of getting into it. I'm in South Tennessee and it seems to be the more prevalent league here.

Plus, I kind of like the rules compared to USPSA.

If anyone here has done it, how did you get into it? What was your first move? Meaning did you seek it an contact a club? Or just show up to a match? Thanks.

Not IDPA, but when I wanted to shoot a long range rifle match I just registered and showed up. Of course I had read the rules and asked some questions beforehand on an online forum. Drove my arse to texas, knew no one, adn shot the match. Everyone there was extremely helpful and the match was great.

Some might encourage you to just go out and watch a match the first time. That may help, Id rather shoot, so I just go shoot.

I might start shooting some pistol matches. I suck with a pistol, but the matches are much closer than rifle matches.

I used to shoot IPSC 15+ years ago. I can't keep up with all the current formats now. I know there's a big league here in south Louisiana. I shoot NRA Action Pistol now. Not as much running around and it's revolver friendly.

Check the internet for leagues in your area. I'd contact someone before I just showed up at a match ready to go unless you know someone.

Where in Tn are you?
I have shot a couple of the IDPA matches with Desoto County rifle and pistol club. Their new range is in Sardis, Ms.
It was pretty informal. Non-members could shoot the course for $5 or $10. Usually shot 3 or 4 stages. You will want to show up with 300 rounds of ball ammo, no hollow point, to make sure you have enough. It would help if you have atleast 4 mags as well. They posted scores on their website.
I went and watched a couple of matches first. They were cool and offered to let me shoot a stage to see what it is like. There are some rules, like not dropping mags, that are good to know.
I haven't shot with them in 3 or 4 years. I would like to get back into it, maybe after hunting season.

Tight. I'm in Chattanooga, TN. This coincides with what I have read.

I have reached out to Cleveland Rifle Club who appears to host matches third Sat of month. Should be able to show up and shoot first time.

IDPA rules state you must be a member after the first time.

I have started to reload so 300 rounds should be no sweat. I'm getting good results from Titegroup, but have some Power Pistol that I'm itching to try. I know I still need to get appropriate holster and vest to start. Thanks for the reply.

Show up and shoot.

I used to shoot it a lot -- my sons & I shot the Texas Sate Match for quite a few years, plus Houston club matches periodically. After a while the drive from BR to Houston got to be too much of a chore.

I shoot every now and then (when my schedule and their schedule coincide) with the quasi-IDPA group in Amite ("quasi" meaning they, to my knowledge, are not officially affiliated with IDPA). They use IDPA targets and IDPA rules.

It's good practice.
