I haven't had any issues with the Win10 Tech Preview. Enjoying it though. Will upgrade from 7.

I'm really happy with 8.1 This just seems so soon for another OS.

This is indeed what it sounds like, and Microsoft is being completely silent on clarifying that point.

I thought it was pretty obvious by this tweet that then sent out.

LIVE UPDATE: #Windows10 will be a service, keeping the experience current for the supported lifetime of the device.

Maybe they don't want to announce the future cost of it until they have it all figured out or something.

After free upgrade to #Windows10, we will continue to keep current for the supported lifetime of the device – at no additional charge.

@turkudellinger @NotAPerso It means you won't be charged any additional cost to keep your device current after the free Windows 10 upgrade.

Missed the tweet, just been scouring articles that have been posted in the past day. So then I guess the question is how much will it cost, and what will it include (office 365, for example).

EDIT: So what does "keep current" mean? Security updates and the like? Or is Microsoft planning to give away Windows 10.1, 10.2, etc. etc. (or however major iterations are named)?

I don't trust Microsoft's version of device lifetime to match mine.

So Microsoft is taking a page out of the Apple playbook. "Give away" free software upgrades but only make the devices compatible with it for a few years. People spend more money on new devices than they do new hardware. Smart move.

Worth noting that Windows hardware requirements have been the same for over 5 years, and are supposedly remaining the same with Windows 10. And a $300 junker laptop from Best Buy well exceeds those requirements.

The vs aspect isn't as cool as the co-op aspect is for me.

Hmmm... now it's looking like it will be free updates?

My new guess based on what was posted is that it will be a free upgrade if you have 7 or 8.1 and they will continue to support it on that specific device for free. If you get a new device from the store, it will have Windows loaded on it already and you will get updates on it for free. If you build your own computer, then they have a one-time charge to put the Windows service on it.

That's just a guess though.

Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for Windows 7 and 8.1 users

Terry Myerson just announced on stage that, for the first year after Windows 10 launches, any device running Windows 7, Windows 8.1, or Windows Phone 8.1 will be able to upgrade to the latest version of MIcrosoft's OS — for free.

Meanwhile in Cupertino, where Apple's sitting on more money than most countries have, they've determined after years of making 11" notebooks and 13" notebooks, that really, they should make.........12" notebooks.

Awwwesooome.

Yeah. Cause Apple hasn't upgraded or updated anything else in the last 5 years.

Smaller iPad? Bigger iPhone? Apple watch? They are just milking Steve's cash cows. Have they come up with anything revolutionary since 2010?

Getting close but I think she'll flirt with 125-130 before tumbling back below 90.

Does this mean they are moving the OS to a subscription system?

I actually love MS but if they even hint at moving the OS to yearly subscription then I will keep my Win 7 and Win 8.1 boxes forever.

Hopefully they mean the 10 upgrade is free but 10.1 will be paid and not that my 10 will expire.

They've already clarified that once you upgrade, you're set. PCGamer had was afraid of this, and they asked about it.

Here's what they said:
quote:

Myerson clarified that Windows 10 users will still get free updates and support for the lifetime of the OS, exactly like past versions of Windows (like XP and Windows 7's Service Packs, for example). There's no subscription model for updates or support or continuing to use the OS. Myerson's reference to Windows "as a service" simply meant that Microsoft plans to update the OS with smaller, more regular updates rather than the big, chunky updates of past Service Packs.

Personally, I think it's a brilliant move. By offering free upgrades, it gives people an incentive to move on from 7 and previous versions. It also strengthens their userbase by keeping customers within the Microsoft nest. If they add the package manager their engineering team has been teasing for a while, Windows 10 is going to be something special.

quote:

My roommate works for Microsoft and has it running on his machine and has had a lot of issues. He's had to reinstall the entire OS at least 3-4 times. I'm sure it will be stabilized for the Consumer Preview release though.

This is typical of any true test environment. I had major issues with Windows 8 early in testing. They were ironed out.
