I read the whole thread. Here are some of my thoughts:
frick all of you who say the show sucks but "I haven't watched in years". Then you don't really know. Fact is, yes, there were a couple of bad years. I'm a huge American Idol fan, and even I struggled through a couple of seasons. The judges right now are the best since Simon was here.
Adam Lambert is a great singer and a great performer and should have absolutely won his season. This is quite possibly my favorite performance on AI, all time.

Last years winner, Caleb Johnson, is a great singer too.
But no, Adam did not break Idol. If it was broken, it was Scotty Mccreery.

IMO the best femal vocalist and musician was Crystal Bowersox. She had her own style and could play her own songs. Her performance of "People Get Ready" was one of the greatest performances on American Idol.

The year fantasia won was the year that Jennifer Hudson was like 5th. Latoya London (sp?) was also that season. They split the vote for that type of singer.
Jennifer Hudson has to be thought of as one of the better singers ever on the show. What impresses me about the show is that when i go to a concert for someone not on Idol, it gives me a greater appreciation how talented the singers on the show are or how untalented the performer in concert is.

Yeah, some performers can't do live. Idol has had some talent. It's weird because right now I am listening to both George Jones and Adam Lambert songs all the time.

Adam lost because of the persona he was going up against. Allen is from the town I live in, and was huge in a chain of churches that have thrived over the last 15 years in this area. Those churches had gymnasiums full of people that were sitting there during the entire voting sessions spamming Allen's votes. I remember the local news talking about how the churches were even providing go phones to those that didn't have unlimited texting.
This town was insane those last few weeks. Everywhere you went someone was having a watch/text party but the fuel behind it all was his church (which I am pretty sure has Baton Rouge roots, does New Life ring a bell?).
Anyway, Lambert was obviously more talented, but didn't have the monster behind him that Allen did.

Adam has a great screaming voice, but he's not a natural superstar recording artist. He's the definition of a broadway/musical performer.
Thats not what Idol is. Daughtry and Carrie are exactly what the show is about.
also, he WAY over does his arrangements for theatrical affect. I'm sure that put off a lot of the voters. I just went back and listen to Ring of Fire, and threw up in my mouth a little.

Adam is about the only person on the planet who can legitimately front Queen. I saw Queen in concert when they were the "real" Queen - the long haired Mercury in black and white jumpsuit Queen (Halloween night 1978, Municipal Auditorium in New Orleans). And I've seen Adam Lambert in concert on his first tour after Idol. His voice is simply incredible live, and he hits every note from the start of the show to the finish. For me, his version of Ring of Fire is the best thing I've seen on Idol, followed by Mad World. McPhee is probably my all-time #2 on Idol - and she is so freaking hot.
ETA: James Durbin is another favorite of mine. His debut album was so much better than the crap that Daughtry is slinging. If Adam had put out a straight up rock album like that, it would have done well.
