On Black River Lake in Monterey this afternoon, there was a flock of 75-100 Sandhills circling and calling for about 10 minutes before flying off to the north.

Has anyone seen these this far northeast? I've never seen or heard any there or here around lafayette before and I thought they were only in South Texas?

It was pretty cool.

I've seen them many places. LSUA highway and Links on The Bayou this year. Always flying, but so low there's no way they are just passing through.

Had two come try to light in a dove field I was in around 1999 near Watson,LA. Was an interesting evening to say the least.

I see a flock of them nearly every year in some fields near a relatives' house south of Alexandria...I wouldn't say they winter there, but they do typically hang around for 2-3 weeks...

once you hear the sounds they make, you never forget it...and you can hear it anytime you are within a mile or so of them...

We hear and see them flying nearly every fall/winter in Bunkie area. Don't recall ever seeing them on the ground though. Some big birds and very loud as you can hear them from a long ways off.

We have a flock that comes here around my house every year (oak ridge vicinity). They been coming for the last 10-12 years. Roost in the same field. This year it seems to be a little smaller than normal. Maybe some of them got capped along the way. Id estimate it to be about 200 Sand Hills. At the height the group was prolly 350ish. I've got some pics somewhere if I can find em...

Eta-I have heard they're good to eat but we've never sniped one and bacon wrapped it a grilled it because there is no season. But I bet it would be excellent table fare.

I saw about 20 of them last year near Rayville. Never realized how big they were.
