Tech closet?

About to start planning a new house. Just wondering what the tech board users have done to help organize routers and other equipment. Do you have a dedicated media closet or something along these lines? Pics would make this thread great.

If I had the luxury of such things, I'd definitely have a well-ventilated dedicated tech room/closet for router, modem, NAS and/or media server, and whatever else I could think of. Emphasis on the well-ventilated; it can't just be a knocked out hole with a door.

Id def run some empty PVC pipe(s) down the wall to help flexibility with fishing wires after construction

In my current house, I took part of the walk in closet and stacked all my media stuff. In my new house, there is a dedicated closet.
Advice: make it centrally located for best wireless signals and least amount of wires to reach all end points.

I did this in our house we just built. At every TV location and a few going into the closet. Mine wound up being under the stairs and not accessible after being built so I made sure to run some. I have a tall rack with everything in it so far. Also put a ac line for some cool air (although it doesn't get overly hot) and a cpl dedicated 20amp circuits.

ive got two cabinets on each side of the fireplace in the living room. one is wired for 4 cable boxes, the other for 2 plus the cable modem and router, receiver, and apple tv. i didnt find that i needed to run cat 5/6 all over the house. everything runs fine on wifi. i ran video with hdmi cables (guess i could have done cat 6 for these).

I finished off an upstairs closet last year and added five Cat6 outlets throughout the house and re-routed phone and alarm wiring to the closet. It's now home to my U-Verse gateway, wireless router, gigabit switches, VoIP phone controller, TV tuners, and cellular phone for the alarm system. I added an attic TV antenna next to it that pulls in 22 stations, most of them HD. I put a louvered door on the closet and insulated the walls which so far seems adequate for cooling. None of the electronics generate much heat. Then I cut the cable once and for all.

So all of the cable boxes for every room in the house are at this spot?

yep. i use IR over HDMI to change the channels. tv's are mounted flat on the wall and everything is clean looking.

Which IR over HDMI did you go with? I just picked up a set of connectors from Monoprice but am a little disappointed in the receiver capability. Do you know if you can swap IR receivers? What about adding a distributor box for the IR blaster downstream? Neither of these are necessary, but I haven't found anyone who's tried it yet.

Each room in my house has a cat6 run to a central location in the attic. In the attic I have a gigabit switch that has sufficient ports for all of the rooms.
In my office I have a set of shelves that is effectively my "tech closet." On these shelves I have my modem, router, a switch for all of my office equipment, a NAS with 4TB (4x1TB) in RAID5 for important data, a Mac server with 6TB additional storage (used for wireless Time Machine backups, torrent downloading, less important storage, etc.), and my work laptop, which needs to be used for certain applications, but instead of using the actual laptop I just stick it on the shelf and work from my personal computer at my desk and remote desktop into the laptop on the shelf if I need to use such an application.
An actual closet for this would be pretty cool, though. If you go that route, I can't stress enough how important ventilation is. With all of that stuff in my office, it's much, much warmer than the rest of the house. In a closet, it would certainly cause failures. Also make sure that if you want to put a router in the closet that it is in a good central location, or that you run cat6 to a good central location for a separate access point somewhere.

Terk FDTV1A attached to a dual articulating arm wall mount that allows for easy aiming and doesn't take a whole lot of space. But I'm fortunate to be close to the stations and all except one are within a 30 degree arc.
I did find a very helpful web site for antennas and would recommend it highly. I bought my RG 6 cable from them and spent about ten minutes on the phone with the owner getting tips on placement, etc. I had already bought the Terk from amazon based on user reviews.

I used the ones from monoprice. They have worked flawlessly for me.

Having a tech closet smack dab in the middle of the house with a small rack would be badass. I could see it now: Multiple cat 5 jacks in every room that come back to a switch, probably 24 port..depending on the size of the house. A couple of APs. Customize some rack mounts to rack the surround sound receiver with an IR sensor run to the main TV. A place for the modem/router/whatever I need to access the internet.
