Wired peer-to-peer network question

At our office, we are changing out 2 computers in a 3 PC wired network. The 2 new units will be Windows 7 based.
We'd like to keep one of the PCs (current OS is XP) as the 3rd. Can we use XP and 7 on the same network?
Thanks.

Are you directly connecting computers together (IE a peer-to-peer network, like you've stated)?
Why not just buy a small, cheap switch?

We already have the existing wired network which works great.

It's also not scalable and interoperability between platforms can be troublesome. The best solution would be to just use a small switch like this one. However, here is a link that may help you:

We already use one of these for our network:
The 2 new Windows 7 machines will be used daily. We'd like to keep the 3rd computer (XP) as an emergency backup.
We weren't sure if we would have to install 7 on that computer to be able to use it to share files, etc.

When he says peer-to-peer I think he just means that there is no dedicated server. It sounds like he is still on a typical switched network.
ETA: A networked XP machine shouldn't have issues communicating with networked Win7 machines, but can you give some specifics about what is done over the network? Does one of the machines host some files, or a database?

Sorry for my semi-literacy when it comes to technology.
You are correct - there is no dedicated server. All 3 computers can access info on any of the other computers.
95% of the files are hosted on my computer with access shared with the 2 others. The remaining 5% are typically Word and Excel files prepared by my assistants.

The Win7 boxes and the WinXP box should all be using SMB for file shares, so there shouldn't be any interoperability issues as far as sharing files.

Ah ok. I misinterpreted your problem. You should not experience any issues with what you want to do.

You should probably upgrade to 7 anyway, seeing as XP is no longer supported by microsoft.

We do plan to upgrade the 3rd computer to 7 also, but we wanted to keep it as is until we have successfully migrated all the files, etc. to the new host computer.

It can work, but it can also give you problems.
Do y'all have a networked printer or do y'all have printers connected via USB and shared from the computer? Or does everyone have their own printer?
Do the computers have passwords on the user accounts? Windows XP was more than happy to share resources with no username or password passed for the SMB connection, but you have to jump through fiery hoops on Windows 7 to get it to accept blank passwords on samba shares.
Printer sharing may be a problem depending on whether the printer is connected to the xp or 7 machine.

The printers are networked but for the most part, each of us prints to the printer in our own office.
In our XP setup, my computer, which acted as a "host", had a password, but the others did not.
