just found a soft, golf ball sized lump on my dogs front left leg. it doesn't seem to be painful and is somewhat free moving. i think its a lipoma but not sure. are fatty tumors (if thats what it is) dangerous in any way and should i have it removed immediately or do they eventually just go away?

My vet squeezed theme regularly on my Golden. They would "pop"under the skin and go away. No pain involved. Try a little pressure.

I think you should go see your vet and let them actually examine your dog and see what they think.

I'm not a vet but my 9 year old lab has quite a few of what you described and the vet said they are in fact lipomas. We had them biopsied and they were negative. Vet told us they aren't a concern but to keep an eye on them.

ETA: as said above go see your vet to be sure. Best of luck to your dog and you

so your vet didn't remove them or anything....they would just go away?

No they won't go away but he did not recommend removing them. Just said to keep an eye on them and if they grow significantly in size to come back. He said for the breed and age it's fairly common.

have it whacked off and biopsied if it isn't a cyst

yeah...i've got a 2 year old Boxer. after some research it seems they're pretty common in Boxers too.

Ya I was pretty worried when I first noticed. I would still recommend seeing the vet to be safe. It was reassuring.

its on a leg so you gotta worry about mast cell tumors- have it aspirated. Boxers are notorious for MCTs, as are goldens, labs and bostons

Don't squeeze them- if its a MCT you're just gonna piss it off potentially leading to death if its a grumpy one, and if its a follicular/sebaceous cyst then you got a raging infection possible.

Lipomas are not usually anything to worry about. However, they can become invasive in the tissues, which may pose a problem in the future. Extremely invasive lipomas or liposarcomas may require surgery.

What kind of dog? If it's a lab it will more than likely be fatal, but you still have some time.

Oh and age of dog?

Shoot it, go get a new cat behind a dumpster. You'll never know the difference.

Kinda soft and free moving are good signs. Would be very easy for a vet to sample it via fine needle aspirate and give you an idea of what it might be. If results look suspicious then have it taken off. Lipomas are rarely problematic - occasionally may cause issues if right in the armpit area but even then they have to get pretty big to be an issue.

To the above note on mast cell tumors - no, MCTs do not kill dogs when palpated. Nobody has ever proven this and there are no papers to support it. Follicular and sebaceous cysts are sterile when formed and should not be infected. They may become that way if opened up.

Where exactly on the limb? On the shoulder?

If at #2, this is a problem and you should get this checked out asap.
