It wasn't so bad landing in the flats, but when the terrain got eneven and I had to land in the dark on the pole was when shite went south. The rocket toppled over, I thought I had enough RCS to lift it up enough for a launch but sadly I had to jettison my two main fuel tanks before the RCS would pick the rocket up. Then trying for the last few biomes the rocket rolled over onto the escape hatch and that was the end of the ride. I had somehow saved the game with the rocket over on its side.

Maybe go with something a bit less time consuming to see if we can get more people to participate.

Or scrub the money requirement and do it on mission time or something.

Yeah, I learned a lesson on this one. It seemed good in concept, but then the execution was shite. The next challenges will be better.

12000 rocket...I can get the image to prove it, but you have all already beat my measly 3 surface samples.

Not a lot of fuel, so need to conserve. If I touched down with 30 fuel, I could do something...

Like using the Mun

My that's close!

Some short burns and then just a little correction is needed

And, voila.

Landing's easy

Sample 1

"Walk"

Sample 2

"Walk" back

Fly

Sample 3

If I would have done it differently...I'd have packed more fuel for hopping around on the surface. I had to decide when I flew that I wouldn't be touching down until the poles, so I had to get to a biome triple junction. Thought that I was close, but nope.

Oh well.

Good job, all!

P.S.> I made it to Minmus on my first 2 rockets easy. Then for some reason couldn't make it back when I wanted to tweak them...for at least 6 tries.

P.S.S> When I finally made it to Minmus with 45/30 desired fuel for hopping around...my game crashed. So Had to land it all over again.

The key I used for saving fuel was for very short burn times til I a got trajectory near where I wanted to land from the burn and I shut the engines off til I barely had time to slow down on the descent. I made sure before I took off I knew which direction I wanted to go as well. Almost 0 wasted fuel. I had a couple of close calls on the slow down where I thought I would break the legs, but the craft was sturdy and light enough it just bounced off the surface a few times.

Yey, can't wait for the next one. Wish Volvagia did one, I am sure he had something creative.

Problem:
With Minmus thoroughly explored our intrepid explorer has run out of fuel and cannot return home. The public has demanded the hero be returned to the Space Center unharmed. KSP scientists and administration would also like the stranded rocket returned. Due to public outcry the administration has declared it will “spare no expense to return our boy”.

The Challenge:

Bare minimum: Return stranded Kerbalnaut from Minmus to Kerbin

TigerDroppings difficulty: Above plus…

Land rescue party within 1 km of stranded Kerbalnaut on Minmus

Scott Manley difficulty: Above plus…

Return stranded rocket to Kerbin

Return to Kerbin and land within 1 km of space center

Rules:
Unlimited cost
No mods (mechjeb etc)
Can only launch 1 rocket
May use any number of Kerbals

Required Screen shots:
Bare minimum: Stranded Kerbal back on Kerbin
TD: Distance from rescue rocket to Kerbalnaut on minmus

SM: Picture of returned lander on Kerbin
Picture of landing distance from space center

You have one week gentleman, happy flying!

I should get more points because I used far less fuel and money.

Good flying, all!

If only I had put a parachute on that lander...

No doubt. I didn't put a parachute on mine either. Getting down to Kerbin without a parachute isn't that hard but my final stage that is stranded wasn't built with that in mind at all. Can't do it with what I've got up there.

ETA: does the rescue ship have to me manned? Didn't see anything definitive either way on that. I usually use an unmanned with an empty command pod for rescues.

The rescue ship does not need to be manned. That would fall under "may use any number of kerbals". Well, zero is a number.

Just out of curiosity, where at KSC would you like the rescue vehicle and the lander parked?

Think I got a fun solution for this one and want to test it...

Ridiculously too much ship, I know. After money limits the first two challenges, I decided to just build a huge ship for the fun of it.
38 meters

I am within 1 km of the base. The 2.2 km in the screenshots is all the way back over to the launchpad where there is a ship that I used for targeting. I landed right off of the runway.

Curious about that.

How does one bring back a lander that is dead on Minmus with no fuel and no docking ports? Refuel by claw?

Yeah we should of did the mod where you can use a kerbal to remove small pieces off on ship and reattach to another so we could dock and make it one ship or the one where you can winch together two ships.

Since I still have fuel. I am going to try some cargo bay return.
