Is the only difference one was on a punt, and the other was a pass?

Eta: I think both plays were called correctly according to the rules, I just don't get why the rules are different when it comes to maintaining possession.

The rule is applied the same, and the refs have ruled the same play two different ways. Awesome job NFL refs.

He didn't complete a football act so it doesn't matter that his knee was down? Are we just making shite up as we go now?

it's bad when they look at it in slow motion at multiple angles. And the guess referee and the ref on the field comes to different conclusions. that makes the nfl look bad because anyone can interpret the rules as they see fit.

To me that was the correct call. The returner possessed the ball and the ground caused it to come out.

Fielding a punt had different rules than catching a pass. Nothing ground breaking there. If it's in his hands he has possession. It was in his hands, he was hit, hit the ground. Then the ball came out.

Ground can't cause a fumble. Can cause an incomplete pass.

The refs got that call wrong as well. He didn't make a football move and thus never had possession, thus its a fumble because it touched him and his knee being down doesn't.

The plays aren't really comparable because one involved a football move and the other didn't. Both were poorly called.

They have different rules? According to expert Mike Carey they have the same rules. They equated it to a receiver catching a pass over the middle.
