I have done some reading on them and how to protect yourself. I know the basic concept of them about how the server and computer create a secure, encrypted connection between each other.

There on free and paid VPN service providers on the internet. Also routers, NASs, and computers can be a VPN server as well. This is where i get lost.

Is the only difference is that with the online providers all your information gets routed through their IPs so your IP is hidden from the source? Are there pros and cons verse getting a VPN service vs setting up your own VPN server?

What exactly are you trying to protect yourself from?

I don't want to get one of those letters in the mail.

But I'm also just trying to get the gist of the whole vpn thing.

A VPN just tunnels your traffic through another computer so you can access resources on that computer's network as if you were directly connected to that network

It sounds like you are confused because you don't understand that there are multiple applications for such a technology.

If you want to hide your activity on the internet, then you want to use a VPN service. That way when you download files (surely we're talking hundreds of gigs of Linux distro ISOs, I'm certain), on the internet it appears to be the VPN computer/IP address doing the downloading, not your home computer.

You wouldn't want to use your own home computer as a VPN for this purpose, because you'd just be tunneling your traffic through yourself and concealing absolutely nothing. You'd still be using your IP address, and your ISP can still be subpoenaed for your information using your IP address.

Where you would want to create a VPN on your own hardware at home is when you are often away from home but need to access resources on your home LAN. That way you can tunnel into your home network as access things as if you were on that network.

Couldn't have worded it any better. VPNs are incredibly handy for companies, and the free ones are great for remotely accessing your PC, or hiding your IP while downloading torrents. I don't see many people needing to be dropped into their home LAN via VPN, though..

I'm the VPN admin at work and the shite can be a real pain in the arse when you start having hundreds of users and a lot of site-to-site VPNs..

that's what i was wanting to clear up. Thank you.

What free VPN do yall use for downloading?

also im assuming when i set my NAS up for remote access it will set up its own VPN to access its information. correct?

What i am wondering is should i use the NAS for this VPN or the Router as the VPN?

VPN is one way of setting up a remote access to a NAS. There are others, so don't make that assumption.

Use the NAS's utility for setting up remote access. If that doesn't work, then start worrying about other ways. Most decent ones have auto-configured "hold your hand-type" walkthroughs.

Just in terms of preventing the ISP nastygram for piracy, either option is effective. I use IPTorrents heavily without a VPN and haven't received any letters. Likewise, if I have to use KickassTorrents or piratebay, I use privateinternetaccess VPN and haven't had an issue. Prior to getting a VPN and a private tracker, I'd received two warning letters from Cox within a two-week span. From a technical standpoint, VPN will hide you most effectively.

Don't want you to think I'm ignoring your question, but this is far out of my area of expertise. I do not dabble in illegally obtaining files via torrents.

Linux distros.

Ever since I lost all my guns in that boating accident I don't do outdoors as much.

Linux distributions. I torrent all the nightly builds of the ISOs and maintain an archive of them. To preserve the software for generations.
