I could probably figure this one out with time, but I thought it would make a decent discussion. I have never seen any of these mimics in person, so I have zero experience. Location is North Rapides, and that may make a difference. Milk, Scarlet, King?

I don't know the answer, but "red and yellow kill a fellow, red and black the poisons lack"....so I am good with that one!

Hubby said probably a LA milksnake, given the location and the red head.

ETA: images I'm finding show a darker head for the LA milk, but he said their heads are redder that far north. (He didn't actually see the pic, I just asked him on the phone.)

I was thinking Scarlet for a while. Sure wish the guy had taken a belly pic.

Did you see my edit? He's caught and we've kept both, so I'll have him look at the pic later.

Any clue how big it was?

Not really. That red oak leaf might give some perspective.

Nah, just to see what the pattern does on the underside.

Thanks. I have never even considered the difference from Lampropeltis until I got this pic.

My son has the snake poster from LDWF on his wall. Looks like the milk snake has a darker head, but the scarlet has yellow stripes not white. Pretty cool looking snake.
