The car is in my dad's name but we cannot find the physical title. I have the purchase agreement and bill of sale both with my dad's name on them.

I have a buyer for the car lined up but I'm not sure what I need to do to get the car in his name.

Any help is appreciated.

State or parish can issue another one.

In Arkansas you have to go to the DMV and simply send off for a lost title. Takes about two weeks.

Contact the DMV in your area. Happened to us a few years ago on a Honda we were selling that was in my wife's name. The credit union said they mailed it to us after the loan was paid but it had been like 3 years and we couldn't find it. All you need is a VIN and who it is titled under and they can send you a replacement. I think it was less than $20.

So there is no way to legitimately sell this thing w/o title in hand?

I gotcha. No there's no "legitimate" way to do it. Your best bet is to sell your property piece by piece to chop-shops and the rest for scrap. If you really want to sell the whole thing to some buyer, you can get a decent forgery if you know the right people but make sure you use an alias and don't let the mark get a good look at your face.

No, you can sell it. The buyer usually has a month to get the title and all done.

Give the buyer a bill of sale, etc. and you should be good. They will likely not be able to insure it without title though.

I sold one a few months back we couldn't find the title for. To make the buyer feel better, I had him go with me to DMV so that he knew it was in my name and the title was in fact on the way. Two weeks later, title came in mail, I signed back and gave to him. Deal officially done.

It is possible, but not having a clear title does put the buyer at some risk, as he doesn't really know that you own the vehicle...some are willing to go through with it, some are not....

you need a signed VEH form from DMV website, proof of lien release, and $29.50 in louisiana to apply for a duplicate title.

Did you not consider the lost title before trying to sell the car, or was the title discovered to be lost once the deal was in motion?

The lending institutions are infamous about not sending the title after the loan is paid. Willing to bet you never received said title.

Title has been found, but I sincerely appreciate everyone's input thus far.

The dad paid cash for the vehicle so there is no lien to be released from.

What is VEH form? I told the guy that I will meet him at notary/title place this afternoon.

Yes - go to one of those auto title companies and they can do it on the spot if the DMV is open. (may not be today because holiday)

I did this a few months back.
