Not all college athletes are poor. In fact many of them come from middle-class and lower-middle-class backgrounds that are far from poor.
There is a stereotype that if you're an African-American college athlete you wouldn't be at school if it wasn't for sports and or you come from a severely disadvantaged background.
Plus a lot of these guys get good summer jobs from boosters.

didn't know they were working 30+ hours a week... thought the NCAA disallowed that
From living with 2 LSU players while in college, they put in more than 30 hours, have mandatory study time, and can't skip stupid classes like others can

Probably the biggest benefit. You can have a hell of a resume in your field coming out

The tats are actually leased by the player's grandmother.
Coaches keep records on that stuff, you know.

I understand this, yet many also walk around saying they don't have food in their stomach by the end of the month,

Poor people spend all their money on cigarettes so this wouldn't be unprecedented.

It's not like those tats are the work of high end ink masters.

Well they don't have to worry about paying back student loans.

If you know people, tats are cheap as shite in the street
i've seen jailhouse tats that cost $5 that were amazing, and half sleeve.

In '07-08 academic year, over 60% of NCAA student athletes came from households with income over 50K.

Now break down those total number of NCAA athletes into power 5 football players and see how many of them come from households of 50k or more a year.
There are a lot of NCAA student athletes in America.

Priorities
Its so surprising that a bunch of 18-22 year old men would have a messed up set of priorities. Who would have thought?!?! Someone should look into that.

Hey man!
These athletes don't deserve money! Who gives a frick if they risk their health and well being! They get a scholarship! Plus a good stipend! That's basically a 30k a year job and all they do is play a game that generates hundreds of millions of dollars! Plus, don't feel sorry for them! 5% or so will end up making a lot of money someday in the NFL!
Also, it would change/ruin the college game! Why should I have to watch a different game than what I grew up loving just so these kids can be compensated fairly?!

It's not about being poor. Who cares if they aren't broke and can afford tatoos/food?
These guys aren't compensated even close to the value they bring the universities they represent.
And if they do choose to accept money in a legal and fair way (signing autographs, selling their own memorabilia, accepting money from donors) then they are ruled ineligible from the NCAA. That's such a joke.
I love LSU and college football. It's my favorite sport. But the NCAA and it's amateur athlete model is laughable and pathetic. I hope they make changes or I hope another organization can be started, like a semipro league or something legitimate, where players can go after high school and get paid, develop, and be noticed while they wait until they are able to be drafted.

Only thing is most of these kids are already compensated beyond their worth. Sure some of them earn their University a lot more both those are few. The average kid that barely plays or doesn't at all would probably be cut in the free market system. Not saying right or wrong, just how it is.
