What are you referring to as target shot? Shotgun shell? Rifle ammo?

Yeah wait, are you saying you bought a high grain target ammo thinking it was a personal protection round? Or that you bought high a high grain target ammo thinking it was a lower grain target ammo?

If the latter, then no issue and will actually probably be smoother and less felt recoil than lower grain

This.

The 147 grain 9mm ammo will almost always have less felt recoil than the typical 115 grain FMJ ammo. However, if it's 124 grain ammo and the box says "NATO," it will probably have more felt recoil than the 115 grain stuff..

But it won't be as good as a jacketed hollow-point or one of the polymer-tipped rounds for SD.

Go practice with the range ammo you bought - we should all do that at least monthly. Order some "good" SD ammo using ammoseek.com or gunbot.com

As the recent FBI report says, the "premium" 9mm ammo will do just about anything the .40's and .45's will do for SD, BUT you have to be more particular in selecting your 9mm ammo.

Seriously, unless you are a competitive shooter don't get hung up on the load you are cutting paper with. Hell shoot the widest variety of rounds you can at the range and find out which one your gun will eat the best. Then buy those for range practice. The only time you need to worry about the round you are firing is when you are shooting center mass at the Meth head trying to gut your wife.
