re: Rubio: If Paul Wants to be Obama’s Chief Cheerleader,’ He Can Go for It"

quote:Of course it is. And his lack of ability to weigh the interests of Americans equally against the interests of Cuban-Americans is what makes him a poor leader.
I'd be willing to bet that Rubio's stance on Cuba was formed long before he was elected US Senator.
If a politician is so stubborn that he can't see that 50 years of doing the same thing isn't working, then how stubborn will he be with other things?

So much irony in democrats treatment of blacks...

When Rubio first came into the limelight a couple years ago (or so), he was one of my favorites. Seemed like a very genuine, straightforward, tell-it-like-it-is person. Now, he's uber-political. He's bought in to the Washington status quo, and now he's just another pawn.
Paul stands alone.
I'd be willing to bet that Rubio's stance on Cuba was formed long before he was elected US Senator. He would probably be disowned by his entire family if he took any other stance.
It isn't so much about his stance on Cuba as it is about his comments on Paul. Calling Paul "Obama's Chief Cheerleader" is utterly ridiculous and it isn't about the issues, it's just playing politics. It's also obvious as frick that he's doing it, and not likely to get him any new supporters.

We know this because it couldn't be anything but an improvement over what the past 50 years has brought us.

You mean people trying to flee Cuba? If you think this is bad, I could not imagine what is good.

Good. What did we get?

We got 2 spies back. One was responsible for helping us track down Fidel's network of spies in the US. The man was in jail for 20 years for helping us.

We gave them 3 spies back. Seems equitable enough.
What did we get for the normalized relations?
I know the Castros aren't going to give up power, but at least tell me they're going to open up the economy a little bit?
Pay the workers more with the coming rush of U.S. tourism dollars? A token promise to improve their record on civil rights? Apologies for blowing that humanitarian plane out of the sky?
Something?

Obama doesn't do very well with these swaps. He gets his arse handed to him every time.
BTW: When is President Transparency going to release that Bergdahl report?

Obama has been working behind the scenes for 18 months now. There are things that can't be publicly acknowledged at this point by either side. I suspect your questions will all be answered in due time. Let's all pray the American people will rally behind our President as he breaks Cuba free from its chains.

There are certain things you don't know about the prisoner exchange

Some things need to remain classified. I hope they do release it soon so people on the right stop running around crazy.

I think we pretty much have the answer already.
Mariela Castro: "America is dreaming."
Raul Castro: "Detente changes nothing."
Raul Castro: "We won the war."

Once the older generation dies off in the next decade, things will change rapidly once Cubans see the benefits of free trade with us. It will happen within a generation.

Except that the regime is going to control all those benefits. This emboldens an entire younger generation of tyrants in Cuba - in my opinion.

The Castros get a cut of all remittances sent to Cuba from the US-and I would imagine other nations as well.
All this does is prop up a criminal operation, that imprisons political and cultural (homosexual) dissidents.
quote:
Consider tourism. The Cuban military has a enormous holding company called GAESA. One of its companies, Gaviota, operates an extensive network of hotels and resorts from which it earns a bonanza of foreign exchange, according to the strategic consultancy Stratfor. Imagine if the Pentagon owned the Radisson, Marriott and Hilton hotel chains. That is the Cuban tourism industry in a nutshell.
If tourism were the key to empowering and eventually liberating the Cuban people, the country would be a robust democracy by now. About a million Canadian tourists go to Cuba every year. In total, more than 2 million tourists visit annually, and yet the Castro regime is still standing.
Or consider exports. As Mauricio Claver-Carone, a director of the U.S.-Cuba Democracy PAC, points out, we have sent $4 billion worth of agricultural and medical goods to Cuba since 2000. “All those sales by more than 250 privately owned U.S. companies,” he writes, “were made to only one buyer, the Castro government.”
So bully for those of you as you think you stick a thumb in the eye of old delusional un-cool anti-Communists.
But you won't be seeing any democratic republic down there any time soon.

Now that Russia and Venezuela are failing, isn't this just us positioning ourselves to make Cuban our ally/associate?
