I've always just worn straw hats, but this year I'd like to get a felt one. However, i know almost nothing about them. Want to get a good one, what brands should I look at or should I go somewhere and get one made? Also, what about 10x and so forth, what grade will be a good one but not break the bank. Want to keep it under 400.

Stetson or Resistol. Good hats, and they'll hold their shape.
Stay with a dark color as you're apt to get rain, snow, etc.
Consider a light coating of Scotchgaurd.

Also, the higher the X number, the more felt. Thus, softer "hand".

In straw, it denotes a generally higher quality.

I had a Stetson when I was a kid. It was nice as hell.

Other than that, I can't help you

I'm a cheap straw man now. Felt hats are too nice and delicate.

Bailey makes a great hat, as does Texas Sombrero. My advice is to get one next time you're in a place like Houston or Ft.Worth from a legit hat store. People who really know hats can do wonders shaping them for a custom fit. Dark colors are good, but a silver belly is quite nice. Just shop around for the best bang for your buck.

Silver belly is a fine hat color, IMO.

J.W. Brooks...a bit more than your price point, but custom made and 100% beaver. You'll never need to buy another hat. I went to his shop a few months ago while I was in Texas, it was very interesting to see hats being made totally by hand.

A high quality beaver hat is very durable, basically unaffected by rain, and can be reshaped many times.

You're absolutely right, same reason I buy all my horse tack from Amish...actual craftsmen.

Yeah, those JW Brooks look nice, but damn that's more than double my maximum.

Probably stick with Resistol or Stetson like already suggested.
I do like the silver belly color, but I always figured black would be more versatile.

Silverbelly looks nice, but is virtually impossible to clean if you get it dirty. There are cleaners available, but it's really just powder that hides the dirt. If you're not planning to wear it every day, silverbelly should do just fine.

It was always the funeral or church hat, IIRC.

I'm more of a straw or a palm leaf guy myself but I've got a resistol George Strait black felt. It ain't but a 6x but it's held up well over the 6 years I've had it so far. The only reason it's a little jacked right now is because it got knocked off and stepped on in a fight a few years back. Never got around to re-shaping it but it wouldn't take much.
