How much would you need get in order to sell a family heirloom? This family struck the jackpot, but would you have considered keeping the furniture?

LINK

quote:

When they were found, they were appraised for the chair between $30,000-$50,000 and the desk between $150,000-$250,000

quote:

The chair and desk were put to auction by the Merwin Hale Wilkinson, Jr. family. They fetched $653,000 for the chair, and $365,000 for the desk, totaling $1,018,000!

Depends on how much sentimental value, which isn't stated in the article, and whether I needed the money. If it's a piece of furniture we just happened to have, no problem. If it come in a covered wagon via the Oregon Trail with an ancestor, I'd want to hang on to it if possible.

My wife and I have banged on almost every piece of furniture in my house. They are entirely too sentimental to let go because I am such a sensitive person about things like that.

I'm not really sentimental about anything outside of my wife, my kids, and my dog.

So, uh, yeah, I'd sell. As soon as I received it.

That's some life changing money right there for someone who may be 30 years old. Not in the lottery sense, but that kind of cash in a lump sum would put my mind at ease in a lot of areas.

I love this kind of shite. My mom was an orphan and we have no family heirlooms whatsoever. I have a problem with collecting other people's. Not like hoarding or anything, but I buy antiques and vintage furniture all the time. Love it when people sell their family heirlooms because it adds to my collection. Admittedly, I cannot afford those prices, though.

That is pretty amazing. I love heirlooms, but with that being said, I would sell that furniture in a heart beat. Furniture is not like a painting or piece of jewelry. It takes up lots of space and knowing how valuable it is, I would have a hard time ever using it or leaving it out.

Standard auction house cut is 35%. They'll have to pay taxes on top of that.

Depends. I'm sentimental, but I don't like heirloom furniture if it is fragile/non-practical.

Much more likely to hold on to other (smaller) stuff, paintings, guns, knives, clocks, watches, etc.

I'm going with 100%. I've never seen a post of her's that doesn't mention something related to downsizing and moving to the country.
