This was a test I did. Kent 3" with kick high flyer performed the best for me. Obviously not the biggest sample size and not a lab type test but it was me Fooling around in a yard

Eta: percentage is number of hits on a target circle out of total bbs in shell

I shoot a modified the majority of the time but I keep an improved modified in my blind bag just incase the ducks are being stubborn and staying a little ways out. Just out of curiosity, what kind of gun are you shooting? I bought 2 boxes of kent 3" #3 fast steel and they keep hanging up in my SBE2. Idk what the deal is.

You should not use a full a choke with steel shot. steel is too hard to be constricted down that much like lead shot. It deforms the shot and it leaves the barrel all jacked up. IMO don't go over Mod with steel

That's what I thought, too.

OP, you should pattern your gun and explore different choke companies/options. Pattern masters used to be a decent choke. It's been a very long time since I played with chokes but they used to be decent. There may be way better options out there now, though.

I don't know if the rule still applies but it use to be a choke would tighten it's pattern with steel.

On my Browning Gold hunter the chokes said:
Improved cylinder - lead
Modified - steel

Most new full chokes are safe for use with steel. It'll say on the box if you can or can't. I know full remchoke tubes are safe with steel.

Absolutely do not use steel in an older fixed full choke gun. You will frick it up.

I use a patternmaster for everything, but I don't think I ever killed a duck with it that I wouldn't have killed with a regular modified choke.

Those Kent shells don't jack up your gun? Those shells burn dirtier than anything else I've shot.

That's for lead shot. Are you supposed to shoot steel with a full choke? I dont think so, but I could be wrong.

I've always heard steel is one pattern tighter in chokes. Example, a modified choke will be like a full choke with lead.

Steel does generally pattern better than unplated lead because it's harder and stays round, or at least that's the theory.

I've been shooting squirrels/rabbits with fiotchii lead and what I've pulled out was still completely round.

Modified is what i think. Whatever one came with my wingmaster. Honestly it doesn't really matter what choke you shoot. If you are on the bird you are on it.

Is there a standard measurement for chokes? Does full modified and improved always equal the same I.D.?
