As a Louisiana native, who lives in DFW area now, I can say NO never comes up in the conversation anymore when discussing vacation destinations.

We used to go at least once a year

I'm not even sure why

Growing up in the metro area I have been to the fq quite a bit. Never had a problem. Even walking back by myself from Frenchmen to the river walk at 4 am. Guy I met recently told me a great tip. Keeping a fake wallet. Throw a 5 in it and some old ids. They don't get shite.

I work in FQ. I get out of work often after 11pm. While I don't walk down by the businesses often, I have seen much fewer NOPD down there ever since the State Police came to town. Even after they left, I haven't notice many return. While some of the local businesses have hired a private security firm, that will only do so much.
I never walk around drunk, though do stop at Harry's for a couple beers after work. Often times I am able to have someone walk with me, but I'm not always able to. The latest attack near Cosimo's on the 1000 block of Governor Nichols scared me the most. It was about 8 people, coming from 3 different directions to attack a group of guys. They are getting bolder.
Something else that scared me recently was this group of 3 thugs robbing people over many parts of the Quarter. Someone posted in the FB page "Safer Quarter", that he had contacted the police, about information of the 3 guys, but had yet to have his call returned.
I will say, I'm not sure how long it had been, but it had to of been a decent bit of time, if he was posting about it.
If you must walk alone at night. Keep your head on a swivel, and walk down the middle of the street.

That's just sad that you feel that way. There are legit ways to enjoy the whole N.O. area without being in fear constantly.
Hell, we pretty much had a record number of tourist last year and the city is booming. If you could take a bike ride around like I sometimes do, you would be amazed at what many neighborhoods are going through with the "gentrifcation".
There is an amazing story going on with N.O. and it's ashame that these fcking scum hood rats have to keep screwing it up for everyone.

Plainclothes NOPD detectives

Still need uniformed officers to deter crime. You used to see NOPD posted at almost every block on Bourbon through Orleans St, every Friday and Saturday night. The number of NOPD has decreased the last 3-4 years.

Taking a wrecking ball to the entire Iberville housing project instead of "rehabbing" it would go along way to solving the FQ's crime problem.

This thread is amazing.

There are a lot of people in from ULL and Nevada. I figure they probably have caught wind of what has been going on down there and some visible officers may make them feel more comfortable. At least on Bourbon.

as for me, im a nitro baw and am not worried about some thugs

I live in the Quarter, and you're fricking crazy.

Why is carrying "crazy." I had an acquaintance who shot a would be robber during an attempt on a French Quarter street. Maybe if they got shot on occasion, they wouldn't be so bold.

I am pretty far from being one of these gun rights zealots, but I will say this, if I were required to be in the FQ regularly, I would probably be an open-carry guy.

Just strap a Colt 45 right on my hip and send a message to these young thugs that if you try to rob me you are literally risking your life to do so.

Now we get the classic defense of "it never happened to me so you should be fine." Fact: NOPD is in a fricking crisis right now of being understaffed. Fact: French Quarter crime is rising. The two go hand in hand.

Preach.

Myself and most of my friends and family have negative interest in going to the Quarter after dark. It's such a shame. It's a beautiful place in the daytime and turns into straight trash at night. The people are gross, the streets are gross, the smell is gross. It's so sad. You can see the potential but it's flushed down the shitter with the rest of the piss and vomit.

Note that neither of the robberies in the story you link to took place in high foot traffic areas (1000 block of Gov Nichols and 100 block of Dauphine)...

I generally tell out-of-town visitors to stay between Bourbon St. and the river. Decatur, which used to be the rough part of the FQ, is now probably the safest.

No but I live near several as does the majority of New Orleans. Saying cops should start reducing the amount of patrols in low income areas is laughable. The biggest issue with the nopd is having very low recruiting classes in previous years which results in patrols being stretched thin.

well said. crime is a huge problem and many Nola citizens continue to gloss over the problem and put the blame on the victim for putting themselves in a bad position.

shite you can't even get an NOPD to call you back after a mugging

Is the FQ more dangerous than Memphis? My wife and I are supposed to be headed to NO in February. We're both in downtown Memphis pretty regularly after dark, so we know how to be smart about our surroundings there. I figure if we act as if we were in Memphis, we should be fine in No as well, we always have been every other visit to NO but it's been a few years.

Yup
Yup
Yup

But walking down the main streets, carrying a fake wallet, and reducing police presence in other areas is the solution.

I don't think that shite is much of an issue in N.O.

I dunno about that, esp after Danziger. Hell, an experienced captain was fired for simply telling his crew to pay close attention to young black males lingering around the FQ with saggy pants. He was fired for that.

My Dad has even tried telling me that the FQ is no more dangerous as it was. Which is complete BS. Its gotten worse in the last several years. I want to get out of the Quarter, and to return only when friends are in town. There is nothing there I can't find elsewhere.
