re: 155 Years Ago Today Confederate Forces Opened Fire on Fort Sumter - Vito Andolini
Like I've said, it was the growing power of the federal government coupled with the north's growing hold over the federal government that was one of the main reasons, along with Slavery, the South seceded.
Yes, but it was the 14th Amendment which really enabled the Federal governme...

re: 155 Years Ago Today Confederate Forces Opened Fire on Fort Sumter - Vito Andolini
Had the South just stayed in the Union, slavery would have eventually ended anyway due to economics (e.g. Brazil) and we would not have the 14th Amendment which in effect made the States political subdivisions of the Federal government. We would still have a true Federal system. ...
It's none of government's business to begin with. It is a religious institution but a-holes like you want the government to "force" the religious institutions to marry those who don't fit their definition
A lot more to it than that. Marriage as an institution brings with it prope...

re: HB 1 being presented today... - Vito Andolini
This line of thinking "it was good enough for me, dangit!" is horrible. We would still be using horses for transportation and pooping in an outhouse with that thinking. Specifically, it is dumb to cut tops just to save direct funding to HIED. Why not just give money to families and let th...
Social "conservatism" needs to go the way of the dodo bird. I'll never understand how it's "conservative" to think the federal government should be allowed to mandate who is allowed to marry who or who is allowed to have an abortion.
So much wrong in your post, most social conserva...

re: Student loan forgiveness - Vito Andolini
I took out just enough loans to get me through school, graduated and in 10 years, they were all paid off. The students who graduate with 100,000+ in student loan debt are morons. I do not feel sorry for them at all. If you don't want student loan debt, work you way through school, join the ...

re: On this day (Easter Monday) in history: The Easter Rising - Vito Andolini
On Easter Monday, 1916, throughout British occupied Ireland, groups of Irish revolutionaries rose up and attempted to overthrow the British government. The Rising was a miserable failure, with most Irishmen either ignoring it or supporting British efforts to quell the uprising. Then the Briti...

re: Mark my words, Ukraine will be the major foreign policy issue of the election. - Vito Andolini
I was against it last year because it looked like the Ukrainian army was about done for. However, last summer they stood up to multiple escalations in fighting and prevented the rebels (aka: Russian troops out of uniform) from getting their land bridge to Crimea, and that changed my opinion. ...
From day 1, I've said the only way to fix a mid-year problem like this is by using 1/3 new taxes, 1/3 one time money, and 1/3 cuts. For next year, you do 1/3 new taxes and 2/3 cuts.
