Would Bryce Petty be a good fit to sit behind Drew till he retires?

Who knows. You never know what QB will breakthrough unless they are a sure thing like Manning or Luck.

We aren't drafting a QB for probably another 2 drafts at least.

You really want to maximize the number of years they are starting on a rookie deal in the modern era. And Brees isn't going anywhere for at least 2 more seasons.

Right idea, too early though. A 3-5th round pick spent on Petty should be a good backup or decent starter on defense, or a good guard on offense. A new backup is not an asset to this team right now

Would be 6th or 7th rounder at best.

Will most likely keep trying undrafted FA QB's hoping to find a nugget till he has a better idea of when Drew is leaving the game.

I'm in the camp that thinks it's too soon to draft a replacement. If we use a late round pick on a QB that ends up being his successor, then great but I don't think it should be a priority at this point.

It really depends on if you're looking at the short run or long run. Yes, Drew Brees still has 3 years on his contract(I believe), but do the Saints really want a 36 year old quarterback who is fading vs a 22 year old right out of college.

If you pick short run, then the Saints should leave a rookie alone for another two-three years and when Drew leaves draft a rookie and have him start. I don't personally like the idea of starting a rookie, I like for them to have 2-3 years behind a quarterback to learn the system and the speed of the game then throw them in.

If you're looking at the long run then I would certainly pick up a strong armed QB soon. Maybe even in this draft, but you severely hurt major needs at positions(Guard, LBs, and DBs). BUT if they could hit a huge FA in the offseason then why not?

1.) We are likely to extend Brees this offseason.
2.) He has 2 years left on his contract after this year
3.) I'd much rather have Brees

I'd rather have the player on his rookie contract while he's learning.

Fading?
If leading the league in pass comp.% over the NFL gods like bradymanningrogers is "fading" I'll take Brees.

Strong arms are a dime a dozen. J Russell R Leaf etc..

Whats hardest to measure is courage, brains, never quit, get the money still play hard, leadership and a want to win at all cost.

Its why I have given up trying to say who is going to be a good NFL QB. The guys getting paid millions and spending a entire year to pick those types can't even get it right

While he's leading the league in completion percentage, there have been times he's looked like hot garbage. He's having a good year. But how many years does he have left? Not necessarily taking a QB this year, but what about next year? I personally wouldn't resign Drew Brees. Let his contract run out and find a replacement.

Also. I wouldn't take Bryce Petty personally. He's good, but I wouldn't want him.

He needs to be extended if we want to be competitive for the next 2 years. His cap hit was backloaded, and we haven't really felt it yet. That starts next year. You extend him at the same $20 million rate for an extra 2 years. Brees gets a guarantee of more $$ and the bonus up front. Saints get to keep pushing off the hit.

Our cap strategy is pushing off the the salaries until Brees retires. You have a rebuilding year, draft a QB and have the cap space to sign players the following year.

Then you have the actual football aspect of it. You want to let the best player in franchise history walk in 2 years when he's showing zero signs of a physical decline.

No. Just another product of the Big 12 system offenses and complete and utter lack of defense. Albeit you really can't find consistent defense anywhere anymore, Petty along with Winston, Mariota and Hundley; I'd stay away from all of them.

He just signed a huge arse contract last year brah. We good.

Most here when he signed were hoping for three good years.

When he's done you dump salary get a low end FA QB to run the show for a year and with a 2-14 record get 1st pick and hope its a good year for QB's.

And those same guys are basically saying their are no good QBs outside of Mariotta or Winston. The next best QB is expected to go late 3rd, or the 4th.
