I think it let's the restaurants off the hook. If they had to pay their servers minimum wage they may pay more attention to how they are handling their customers.

Never thought of it that way. Good call.

So basically it would make them care a lot more about who they are hiring because they are on the hook for a lot more money.

Interesting.

No offense but this is not true...every well-run restaurant focuses on their servers' customer service because the restaurant pays the price for bad service in the form of comps, wasted food or lost of customers...

In fact, paying a server only $2.13 makes it much harder to manage because servers resist all their side work, cleaning etc because all they think about is how they aren't making any money after they get cut even though all of that is part of the job that allows them to make really good money.

During the rare occasions I'm getting bad service, I don't just keep my head down and take it like a champ. I'll look around and see if my server is just fricking off or bipolar.

eta - As a former service industry employee, I tip anywhere between 10-30%

Maybe you might know the answer to this. Why do most restaurants now include a "tip" section on a bill when no waiter or waitress is provided? Those places where you order, fill your drink, go pick up your own order, get all of your silverware/napkins, and throw away your food? Sandwich shops, burrito places, and the like.

I don't know, but I can't help myself from leaving a little bit each time.

So actually people like me are why

I have a tipping problem.

Honestly, at a lot of places, it is the POS system. Same reason you see "suggested tip" and then some percentages.

You're right.. I see it at little takeout Chinese joints with a few tables a lot.

Yes it is. It's why the industry has a crazy high turnover. Those employees are expendable. The restaurants don't care about the server. They can get 5 more tomorrow.

Yup. Always a $1 tip minimum on any drink I order at any location. Better the drink/attention/atmosphere the better the tip.

You can tell a lot about a person by how they treat wait staff

This is true.

Although, I have to admit. We mass quit at my old job, and I started getting calls begging me to come work because everyone quit and the new servers didn't know what to do yet.

Gotta at least maintain enough respect to keep your staff from scheming a mass exodus.

GTFO. Why do black people have to be responsible for everything in the black community? You act like we get together as a community and plan out how we are going to act. I'm only responsible for myself and my family. FOH

No one is entitled to good service.

Thinking you're automatically owed everything sets an unreasonable expectation and justifies bullshite in your mind.

I get great service everywhere because I walk in with a good attitude. Cut jokes a/ the staff and am patient and grateful. I usually get a little extra hookup at some point and I typically tip 25% and better.

Also I'm not trashy so that could help too

We're like "stereotypes are sometimes true" semi-racist.

You're like "I have a FatHead of David Duke in my living room" full blown racist.
