Oh hell no I wont do it at a top end place. But if i am at pluckers, chimes, or places like that I will. I dont see how this comes off as rude, maybe I am wrong.

I'm the GM of a restaurant and I had a customer try to give me a $50 tip the other day since I stopped and checked on him a couple of times.
I told him to give it to the server...all I did was talk...

Why we haven't done away with this antiquated system of tipping servers I'll never know. And I'm a 30-35% guy, middle aged and white as white bread.

Agree. Charge a service fee or raise the prices.

The people who don't normally tip will hate it though The guy who just said he doesn't tip for beers in clubs will be mad when his Bud Light is $6-$7.

You know how I know you have never worked at a busy restaurant? Haha Makes the busboy and dish washers jobs much easier.

At the conclusion of the meal, imagine your dinner plate as a clock and place your utensils in the 4:20 position. It’s considered rude to push your plates away, stack them up or hand them to the server.

I only knew about that because my wife used to work at a fine dining restaurant.

I guess we're to assume that these people are illiterate and couldn't read the prices on the menu before ordering?

Typical. Why is this behavior from these less than humans surprising?

I think it let's the restaurants off the hook. If they had to pay their servers minimum wage they may pay more attention to how they are handling their customers.

Never thought of it that way. Good call.

So basically it would make them care a lot more about who they are hiring because they are on the hook for a lot more money.

Interesting.

the point of me going to a restaurant or bar is for enjoyment. I dont go there to make a scene or get all worked up. Why focus on the negatives and ruin my good time just because the waiter made a simple mistake or is having a rough day?

These are my thoughts. Someone who is focused enough on the service to notice a small frickup is ruining my good time. I don't go out to discuss the damn server. I go out to enjoy the company of the people I'm with.

If you're focusing on the service, you're no longer enjoying my company/paying attention to me, so I will probably never dine with you again.

I tip six bucks on three miller lites at a restaurant bar.

If I am at City Bar, some girl ain't getting a tip on a beer when she grabs four at a time and pops the cap in five seconds. She may get a five dollar tip at the end of the night.. Mixed drinks get an individual tip each and probably a few more dollars on the whole tab.

A restaurant bar making true cocktails gets great tips.. College kid tipping a clear captain bottle into a cup while spraying coke should just be appreciative of the two bucks he might get.

Like I said, Im not dumb enough to do it at a place like Emerils, Mr B's, or white table cloth places.

But I bet you anything that the dishwashers, bus boys, and waitresses who have to deal with those plates at an average restaurant appreciate the help.

That is the exception to the rule. At nicer places, do not stack them, but at a casual dining place, especially at a busy place, its nice to make someone elses life easier. I normally do it at casual places while waiting for the check. Just habit of a former server and cook.

They probably couldn't even count the total number in their group, much less how to add up the prices. I am surprised they would be at a place that didn't have pictures of what the food looks like.

Even when I get really bad service, which I can count on one hand in my lifetime, I have left 10%.

I once did have a server quit in the middle of her shift when I was her table, but it had nothing to do with me. Her manager became my waiter

You think you get bad service sometimes now? Eliminating tipping and going to reasonable wage paid by the restaurant would mean a lot lower level of server...my servers make $18-20 an hr...restaurants could not afford to pay close to that without a major increase in prices or hiring much worse staff.

Yup, my fiance has a friend who can be a complete bitch to servers. I refuse to dine with them anymore.

My wife usually stacks them too, and says "I know you aren't supposed to do this but..."
