Yeah but this bag was on the seat. People (myself included being guilty of this) purposely put a bag on the seat next to them so that no strangers sit there. It's a douche move.

Today, I learned that "laptop" is new slang for "tub of margarine".

Everyday is a schoolday.

On the guy's part or the fat chicks?

On planes seats are assigned and overhead is at a premium on most short business routes (my main one is between Reagan and Hartsfield-Jackson right now). On the subway, I guess it's different. You don't really have the right to reserve a seat with your bag.

I guess the guy's remarks were a bit high-handed. They both kind of sound like assholes.

Yeah, I mean it's not a subway - it's a commuter train that goes 60-80MPH. On a commuter train you don't have assigned seats. In fact, they don't gaurantee you a seat. They are run and underfunded by the state, and as such they don't have as many seats / cars to suit the volume, but they try their best. What they do is say you can't reserve a seat for your bag - everybody that is standing must be in a seat so that they can have as few standing passengers as possible.

It's very common to do that. I would assume (and this used to be my douche move) that this woman was intentionally had her headphones on and looking the other direction on purpose so that the guy wouldn't engage her.

I'm tired of people seeing every minor negative experience that happens to them to be racism.

Considering she's Professor Crunk who was doing a "teach in" and wrote an article about how a guy offended her when he highlighted her lack of courtesy, I'm going to guess he probably said something like "Well you couldn't hear me because of your headphones"

I agree with the first comment in the Salon comments section. This not worthy of further discourse -

I sometimes think the biggest racist in all these situations is Salon. I think they know exactly what Brittney "Professor Crunk" Cooper is going to bring to the table - many outrage clicks.

They make tons of money off her righteous but clearly misguided posts, knowing thousands of people will come for the carnival. All the while, they hide behind the façade of "diverse perspectives".

They know full well there are plenty of good, black writers who could offer nuanced, insightful, and meaningful views on these complex racial matters, but instead they default to the one who will blame everything on racism because she'll generate more revenue.

I mean, you don't write a sub-heading with the word "nightmarish" in the title over a minor situation like this and take yourself seriously. It's just not possible.

But my bet goes with riding the train while yankee

My wife and I were vacationing in Chicago earlier this year and I helped the elderly lady sitting next to us on a train place a phone call on her new smart phone. She explained that her daughter had given it to her and didn't show her how to use it.

After finishing her conversation, she handed the phone back to me to hang it up for her and I offered to show her how to use it to make and receive calls.

During my explanation she interrupted me and asked if I was in the military and I replied that I was not. I then asked her why she thought I was and she said "well you're so polite and you keep calling me ma'am."

Yankees are so used to being rude to one another that they have no idea to handle someone simply being polite to them.

There is absolutely not a single right to taking up space on public trans.

If someone had pulled that stunt on the L (here in Chicago) on one of the early morning lines that are super-busy (Red, Brown, Purple, Blue), then they'd have their shite shoved in their face, no matter white, black, brown, blue, or green.

I've shoved peoples' bags plenty of times out of seats to make room on the train. It's a simple matter of courtesy on public transportation.

Edit: I'm also a born- and bred-southerner used to certain manners and social norms, but you become inoculated against the crap after about three months in a city like this. Ignore the homeless, force your way on public trans, be an arsehole driving on the streets...it's necessary to survival in the concrete jungle

The only places left in America where racism is a huge daily part of life is academia and the media and politics. For those of us in the real world who have moved on, it's becoming increasingly obvious that all of this is just a Marxist ploy to incite class warfare for political/capital gain.

And, in academia, it doesn't matter what you teach. My little sister is finishing her doctorate at a prestigious East coast school in archaeology/ancient history, and all she can talk about is the oppression of these people and racism against that people and white privilege. The school where she got her Master's is impossible to get into without using the words "white privilege" in the admission process. shite's out of control.

Two young black men and two young black women were standing and talking in front of a stairwell at my college last semester. After politely saying "excuse me" several times without a glance in my direction, I gently pushed one males backpack forward to squeeze past him, while again saying "excuse me"

He proceeded to shout "What you in a hurry fo'?" at me and followed me for a few steps as I went down the steps.

Needless to say, I'm ashamed of my racist actions that day, of touching that young man's property after he failed to listen to me.

I wonder how she would feel if a white person was outraged about a black person thinking he had the right to sit on the bus.

What the frick.

Where the frick do I begin? What the frick.

YOU had your headphones in, and call someone racist because you couldn't hear them when they tried to get your attention? What the frick.

I wonder if the white guy has his own blog somewhere where he's ranting about the social impoliteness of people always wearing headphones in public and ignoring their fellow man

Honestly, I'm skeptical the incident happened as she described it, and I would even go so far as to say it probably didn't even happen. It sounds completely made up.

Sounds as legit as Holder's racial profiling stories.

Should he have waited for the conductor to do it for him? You think the old white man wants to sit next to the fat black woman wearing beats?[/quote]

I didn't, thanks for the info
