why is it a fallacy? never really understood that.
I'm being serious, would like an explanation...
It mostly has to do with the degree that people infer that another event will inevitably happen.
OMG Sony cancelled the release of a movie because of terrorists, so the US government will basically have to shape policy due to threats from North Korea.
It doesn't have to be that extreme but you get the idea.
People wrongly assume that if you do one action, that a subsequent action must follow. Which is untrue because restraint is possible.

What kind of info could they possibly have that would allow them frightened enough not to release the movie?
Probably someone saying the n-word and if they did they could get the company taken away from them because of it

right, well i understand what the slippery slope thought process is, but i guess i dont understand why it is incorrect.
so you are saying the reason it is a fallacy is because restraint is possible?
In my mind, I sort of agree and disagree. Not necessarily on this subject because I think cancelling a movie isnt that big of a deal. I also kinda think that if someone saw that these threats worked, maybe a threat would work on shutting down something else. Probably not though, because cancelling a movie is a pretty small thing in the grand scheme of things.

Missing the point. Who cares about the movie. The threat worked. What threat will work next??
this
I can't believe they caved like this
All this will do is embolden other hackers to carry out similar attacks.

Real threats to release data is why Sony caved.
Sony delayed release of film bc no theaters would play it. They had no choice. Once the 5 majors cinemas refused to show the movie due to terrorist threats, Sony made a statement.
It will still be released on DVD and make a killing. My point was terrorist threats worked and in a way, compromised free speech in the US.

Yes. Just because A happens doesn't mean that B will happen.
The mindset might change which could lead to B, but B isn't guaranteed to happen thus it's a fallacy. A doesn't really have any bearing on B.

If that really did happen the administration needs to nationalize/seize it and distribute their assets to black Americans that have suffered from Sony's racism.

No way it will make a killing if it is not released in theaters, in fact there is no way it will even make any profit.

Well, for one thing, they have already released a bunch of health claims data for specific Sony employees and dependants. They probably have alot more.
Per HIPAA, each individual disclosure can carry a penalty of $50K-$1.5 million. The fact that it was a hack does not matter.
That's just the medical data. Individuals effected by the hack can also bring civil claims against Sony for disclosure of their personal info, financial info, etc...
There could be civil litigation for their wage practices if it can be proven there are gender or race disparities.
So much potential for litigation against the company based on the hacks.
ETA: :tinfoilhaton: It would not surprise me if Sony played a key part in the decision by theaters to not show the movie, giving them an out to delay/cancel the release.

God, now I really want to see the movie

I never expected to hear you say that after reading your extreme liberal poetical posts

What does this guardians of peace want? They got what they wanted but they will still leak more emails Sony executives had sent
Posted on 12/17/14 at 5:15 pm to CherryGarciaMan
I think the movie release being delayed had more to do with the major theatre chains deciding not to show the movie over terrorist threats than it did with Sony worrying about the hacked info. Sony surely knows that any hacked info is going to be released regardless.

Putting the hammer down on Sony is way more of an accomplishment than 15 holes in one in a row IMO.

I just wish I could spit some Beechnut in KJU's eye while I watched it.
