On the rectum. It's the worst city I've been to that isn't in the rust belt. My life's biggest regret was going to LSU in that shite hole.

then please leave if you have not already. I'm not in love with this place, but I don't go around complaining with a panty waste like you are.

Good post. From 21-26 years old I went from living in BR to Boulder to hitchhiking to Nola to Alaska.

I can't imagine living in Baton Rouge in my 20's.

It's actually kinda great, especially since I'm about to no longer be working saturdays. I can walk or bike to tons of good restaurants. I have a great bar practically across the street. My neighbors are super cool and we throw parties together (the one for Festivus should be epic). I can go to New Orleans or Lafayette whenever I want, my family is close enough that I can drive home on the weekends to see them if I want to, but far enough away that I don't feel obligated. I can catch bands with my friends at Chelsea's, Spanish Moon, or the Varsity. I can go bar-hopping with my SO downtown. I can meet up with my brother and my dad for dinner and beers after work. It's been hell working 60 hours+ every week, but now that that's about over, I should be able to really have some fun in this town.

There's an old saying in Louisiana:
If you're not having fun in Shreveport, you're not trying hard enough
If you're not having fun in Baton Rouge, you're not trying
If you're not having fun in New Orleans, you're dead

Honestly, BR is my 4th choice in Louisiana. I definitely prefer New Orleans, Lafayette, and Covington/Mandeville, but rather than sit around and bitch, I've embraced it and had a blast. Home is what you make it. I'm sure I'd have a blast if I was in Austin, NYC, or even Manhatten, KS, but that's just because I'm a fun person. Generally, most people who hate BR really don't hate the city as much as they hate themselves, traffic, or their family that lives there.

Obviously the Audubon Alive thing was a boondoggle, but seems like everything else he has proposed has been for much-needed improvements to infrastructure.

My dad was in journalism school at LSU with him. I've got pictures of Kip at my parent's wedding donning a funky 70s suit with an afro.

ETA: I agree that this is literally the perfect job for him.

Most of the people my age that I know who hated Baton Rouge were either from New Orleans or they spent most of their time at home playing Halo instead or carving out a life for themselves.

Cute blanket you got there; you knit it yourself? Anyone can have fun in Nowhere, Kansas--doesn't mean I'll defend the place against somewhere like Austin. One day you'll be able to travel and you'll be glad you made the most of a bad situation, be glad you had a good head on your shoulders and found happiness, and be pissed you wasted your youth in little Cleveland, Louisiana. In the grand scheme, it's an abysmal place. I had fun there too. I didn't know any better. Good for you for embracing your captors.

My dad was at the Halloween party at the Country Club of Louisiana years ago when Kip showed up wearing a KKK robe and yelled "Where all da white women at?" My dad was apparently one of the few people who found that hilarious and not uncomfrotable

I won't defend BR against Austin. Austin is a top 5 US city for me. Been there and loved it. However, with that being said, the rent on a similar place in a similar neighborhood in Austin would be 3-4 times what I pay in BR.

No I'm as happy as a pig in mud. I just choose not to justify living in one of America's worst major cities. I'd rather be a homeless bum in paradise than the richest man in Baton Rouge.

I graduated from LSU feeling cynical about the whole thing and knowing I wanted to distance myself from all my Fraternity "sisters" social-climbing and one-upsmanship. A couple years later I was riding a bike across South Korea and living off an awesome beach in Kyushu teaching English. I spent my 20's doing Ride The Rockies and hiking the Flatirons on a daily (I really mean daily) basis. Saddle Rock, Gregory Canyon, Mt. Sanitas (for sick time) Green Mountain, Bear Peak etc. I'd never trade any of that. Not a second. How could you possibly describe a "century ride" around the Foothills of Boulder to a sedentary Flatlander in Baton Rouge who spends his 20's hanging out at Ivars? My BR friends just didn't "get" me and my wandering spirit. They thought I was lost, in reality I had found my spot where I belonged.

But Baton Rouge is awesome for me now-At this particular stage. The 20's are about self-discovery and adventure and adrenaline. The 30's are about starting a family and reveling in NOT being the center of your own life. The 40's are about being the man you want to be and self-actualizing as much as possible. Every period of your life has a different purpose, Imho. Baton Rouge would have KILLED me at 26. At 46, it fit like a shoe.

I never thought I'd have so much in common with a socialist. I lived at the base of Chautauqua Park then lived in a tent for 6 months on the Appalachian Trail then did some hitchhiking across the west and now spend 4 months of the year backpacking the Third World on a shoestring budget. Problem is that I'm afraid I'm skipping the family phase and going straight for self-actualization.

How did you afford that life style? I would love to those kinds of things, but I just would not be able to support myself. I've still managed to be pretty well-traveled, but have not been able to do much traveling (outside of football games) since I started college.

ETA: When this project I'm on finishes up in the mid-late spring, I'll have some serious vacation time saved up, so I might want to take a big trip.

The repeated bond proposals and that terrible idea for spending taxpayer funds on private development ruined him on me, and I even voted for him the second time he ran. I did not make that mistake again the 3rd time.

that shite hole

The only complaint I can level against BR, during my infrequent trips there, is the traffic. Whoever designed traffic flow and the light system should spend time in a Turkish prison.

Well, and electing John Delgado to a position where he has input. That isn't cool.
