I understand if it was automatic but for manual cars it doesn't make much sense. Wouldn't it be called a manumobile? Just some food for thought.

So, you think the "auto" is only in reference to the transmission?

This is a stupid thread.

I, for one, still refer to them as "talkies."

Great question, Mac

I don't have the answer to that right now. But does anyone in here know why Queefs are called Queefs?

I've never heard of a horseless carriage being referred to as an "automobile". Link?

I don't see any other reasoning as to why they would call it auto other than transmission

I believe it means self-moving. As in it has it's own source of propulsion, an engine... and it does not need an external mover, such as a horse.

Well does a human not count as the mover?

automobile (n.)
"self-propelled motor vehicle," 1895, from French automobile, short for véhicule automobile (see automobile (adj.)). The modern Greek calls it autokineto "moved of itself." The French word had competition in the early years from locomobile; in English other early forms were motorcar and autocar. An electrical car was an electromobile (1899).

Seriously? The human is not moving the car. The engine is moving the car.

A human propelled car would be seen in The Flintstones.

Nothing else relating to the way a car functions could be considered automatic?

Only if he's driving Fred Flintstone's car.
