I'm not sure. First let's have a debate on whose story we are talking about. Ralphie's mom's or the lamp's? Because those kind of story elements are very important.

Clearly the story is about the lamp. Ralphie's mom does not undergo any heroic journey, and thus does not change. Since she does not change, the story is not hers. So clearly the lamp lept to its death as soon as it got the opportunity to do so, even though there was nothing leading up to the event that would make someone think the lamp had to die in order to complete the story.
Mom didn't do it. Lamp committed suicide. The elements of the story are obvious.
