Omer Asik ain't pretty but

He's very effective on defense.
He's currently the #4 Rim Protector in the league.
FG% at Rim on starters who have played at least 10 games and defend at least 5 attempts per game LINK :
Andrew Bogut 38.5%
Roy Hibbert 38.5%
Tim Duncan 41.9%
Omer Asik 43.0%
Serge Ibaka 43.4%
He's 10th in the league in rebounding at 10.5 per game and 4th among starters in rebounds per 36 minutes behind:
Andre Drummond 14.4
Tyson Chandler 14.3
DeMarcus Cousins 14.2
Omer Asik 13.5
DeAndre Jordan 13.2
When he's on the court opposing teams score 99.8 pts per 100 possessions. When he's off the court they score 111.0. That's an 11.2 point difference. On the defensive side of the ball it's pretty clear he's elite.
Yes he's frustrating to watch, there are so many rebounds that he almost has and so many easy shots at the rim that he almost makes. If he had 10% bigger hands and 10% more explosion he could average about 3 more rebounds per game and at least 6 more points. But he's a net positive, 0.8 combined offense/defense on/off, and he's an effective defender that lets AD do his MVP thing instead of getting beat on in the post.
BTW, Robin Lopez is averaging just 7.1 rebounds in the same 27 minutes that Asik is averaging 10.5 in. He's also #19 in rim protection at 48.5% and the Blazers actually allow 1 more point per 100 possessions when Lopez is on the court vs. Asik's 11.2 points less.
To be fair Lopez' better offensive skills gives him an overall better on/off net rating of 3.5 vs. Asik's 0.8, but we need defense and rebounding from our center, not scoring. This team scores well enough, it gets into trouble when it can't get stops.

It's kinda sad that you actually had to make this thread for some people on this board

I love the pick up of Omer. He is the perfect complement to AD. Not sure why people are upset with him.

Apparently he was supposed to score 15 pts per game while shooting 60%.

+1
danman (a normally reliable poster) has gone off the rails with the Asik hate. I think Monty is literally going to drive us to insanity on this board. It takes a lot of mental fortitude to be a Pels fan.

If we had good/great shooters at the 2 and 3 to compliment Jrue/AD/Omer, no one would notice Omer's lack of offense.
Jrue to set things up and play D, wing shooters to space the floor, AD to do his thing, and Omer to clean the glass and defend the rim. That's a lineup.

If only Monty and Demps could see this. Add some bench depth and this team would be nice.

I didn't get the Tyreke signing at the time and I still don't get it now. It made NO sense for this roster, and it still doesn't.
If you can turn his contract into two adequate to good shooters at the wing, that would be a win.
They must sign/acquire a good wing shooter this offseason.
shite, maybe you could trade Gordon to Philly for Jason Richardson's corpse. They are tanking next year too I'm sure, maybe they could use some salary.

Well it's a good thing we are only paying Asik triple what Lopez makes.

This is the last year on that coming off an injury make good contract. They'll be much more comparable in price after next season. And in terms of cap figure the current comparison $6.1 vs $8.3.

Comparing the two is laughable.

Donatas Motiejunas ain't much worse according to the chart. Maybe we should pursue him for 1/4th the price next year.

I asked this last night in the game thread. Is there a contested rebounds stat? If so, how does Asik fare in that cat?
Posted on 12/5/14 at 11:14 am to tgr4ever
Motiejunas is going to get paid a lot if he keeps up his current level of production.

I haven't watched Houston this year so it may be a completely legit stat for him, but I'd be pretty surprised if that's the direction he's gone. He was supposed to the next "The Next Dirk".

Of all the bad fits on this roster, Omer is not one of them. How quickly some forgot what it looked like to have the steamer out there with AD.
