Considering his record at Oklahoma State:

2001: 4-7 5th in South
2002: 8-5, won bowl, 3rd in South
2003: 9-4 lost bowl, 3rd in South
2004: 7-5 lost bowl, 5th in South

Were they up in arms? Happy? What?

pretty disappointed overall
the narrative was "well, he beat stoops a few times"
that made it sting a little less I guess

Two things:

1) Most of us did not know who he was;

2) When we found out who he was, we were meh

I personally was disappointed with the hire and hoped for the best while expecting a dropoff. I felt a little better a few weeks later when Jimbo announced that he would stay at LSU.

Pretty much an unknown...much like Saban was when we hired him.

Wasn't happy one bit, I can remember hearing Jimmy Ott on the radio breaking the news and remember thinking this guy just had his team slaughtered in the Alamo bowl by the Ohio State University and we are hiring him as Head Coach. I remember thinking that Bertman may know Baseball but he doesn't know crap about football. Never really liked the hire from the very beginning.

1. Who the hell is this?

2. "Monday night hurricane game VS Tenn, 100+ degrees at night, give up a big lead in the second half". Get that conservative BS coaching outta here!

I remember crying on Christmas Day when Saban left. I was 17. I did not know much about Miles at the time. I was hoping for either Spurrier or Petrino at that time. I still wonder what Spurrier could have done if we hired him when we had the chance.

Would have been fun to hire Spurrier.

The timing of Saban screwed us. Spurrier and Meyer had already found jobs and the main names floating around at the time iirc were Petrino, Del Rio, Miles, Tedford, Ferentz, rich rod. I was hoping for del rio or Petrino.

I was quite encouraged. I thought they had used the same formula they used ti find Saban.

Petrino was definitely one of them, I remember his name being heavily involved as possibly LSU's next HC. Even back then he was thought of as a scumbag, primarily due to his stabbing his former mentor Tuberville in the back. Remember the secret unauthorized meeting?

Not a single pumper will post in this thread as it completely flies in the face of their "see look at Florida and Nebraska" narrative

I was hoping for Del Rio too. I didn't know a thing about Miles when we hired him but I figured Skip knew what he was doing. Maybe he did...that's not exactly a who's who of coaching names right there.

One question I've always had is, was no consideration given to promoting Jimbo from within? With hindsight, it might have been a good move.

I remember watching a completely inept Ohio State offensive team completely beat the dog shite out of Okie State and thinking to myself, this is who we hired?

It was given slight initial consideration but was quickly dismissed because:

1) they wanted someone with HC experience

2) Jimbo was considered to not have enough overall experience

3) Jimbo was considered to be one dimensional (offense only).

As a die hard Miles fan today, I'm happy to say I was extremely underwhelmed and disappointed in the hire, as 90%+ of our fanbase was.

Which is why so many of our idiot fans never gave him a chance after wanting guys like Spurrier, Petrino, Butch Davis, Del Rio, Rich Rod, or Erikson.

I have always loved Spurrier and he was 100% my #1 choice. I always wondered if we even tried calling him since he had just taken the SC job.

Butch Davis was easily my #2, and I also wonder if he ever got a call since he was just fired from Cleveland.

Then was Rich Rod.

I NEVER wanted Del Rio or Petrino.

Miles never even crossed my mind.

But I tried to keep an open mind, and he grew on me after doing a remarkable job throughout the Hurricane season of 05, despite the disappointment of UT, which to this day is the most painful loss I have ever experienced.

That team improved greatly over the year and was much better than the 04 group imo, which was a very pleasant surprise given the stress of the time and playing 11 weeks without a bye.

The gritty wins over Florida and Auburn were awesome, and the road win over top 5 undefeated Bama was a total surprise to me. I lloved the OM thrashing of O. I knew the SECCG was just us running out of gas, and the bowl destruction of top 10 Miami had me very excited for our coach.

06 was a lot of fun, destroying Zona and Kentucky, and the two big late road wins to salvage a season I felt the refs stole from us on The Plains. Blowing out ND the day Saban went to Bama really showed me that Miles was up to the pressure more than anyone we could have hired.

That was confirmed throughout 2007 imo, as he played with a top 2 ranking from week 1, something Saban never dealt with in his championship season in BR, and we responded, showing up every game, only losing in 3OTs both times, without a no show game like Saban in 03 against Zook.

Blowing out VT, outfoxing Spurrierwith the fake FG, the wild wins over Florida, Auburn, and Saban himself, with a SECCG win with our backup QB and blowing out OSU when I truly thought they would win sold me 100% on Miles as our guy.

That didn't change for me as we rebuilt in 08 and 09 after he dismissed RP and Saban ran through the worst West ddivision in a decade on the way to his title in 09 while the Miles haters lost their heads and shat all over our program for recruits to see nonstop as their inferiority complex over Saban showed through.

It certainly didn't change in 2010 despite a difficult to watch O that just found ways to win, including over Saban and Meyer, going 11-2 and finshing ahead of Saban when so many had written Miles off the two seasons before.

And then 2011, the greatest season in LSU history by far. 13-0 SEC Champs with only one game decided by less than 2 TDs, an overtime classic on the road over Saban in the GOTC #1 vs #2.

1/9 was a sham. A mockery and robbery orchestrated by ESPN to get their playoff payday.

Given the limitations of both of our QBs against an all time great D, but were hidden so remarkably well all season by Miles and staff, Alabama was better than LSU. A fact that was clear on 1/9, but which made Miles' win over Saban in the GOTC even more legendary imo, not less so.

The hatred that man has dealt with since that night, nearly outcoaching another superior Saban team in 2012 and now 2014, will forever mark him as the most misunderstood and underappreciated figure in LSU history, if not CFB or sports history.

The recruiting class from last year that is poised to once again embarass all of his naysayers the next two years the way he did in 2007 and 2011, not to mention 2006 and 2010, has me so excited to have him as our coach and for what lies ahead.

As someone that underestimated him when he was hired, I am so happy to admit how wrong I was about him.

See, it really isn't that hard to say
