Just to be used for surfing, word processing, etc. Don't need a gaming computer.

Although I have no experience with refurbs from Newegg, their customer service is legendary. I let the smoke out of a motherboard one time, and they took it back. To be fair, the manual (having been translated from Mandarin, to Japanese, to Korean, back to Mandarin, then to English threw me a little) wasn't 100% clear and there was a conflict. I guessed wrong.

Anyway, I was truthful as possible on the RMA and they replaced it. I've never dealt with company more behind the products they sell than Newegg. As always, YMMV.

I've been looking at this one for a while hoping it would drop below $500. It hasn't.

From my limited knowledge, it seems like more than enough power for the average user.

there's no way I'd buy a 16 inch laptop that wasn't at least 1080p

You think full HD is that important on a laptop?
Acer has a similar laptop (+full HD) for an extra $100. LINK

I think full hd is important for anything... but especially at that screen size.

eta: after some quick browsing it appears that it's harder than I thought to find a full HD laptop at that price point and screen size

Yeah, Amazon doesn't even have a 1080 browsing tab for laptops.

Did you see that $600 ACER I posted earlier? It's has similar specs but is 1080. Do you have any thoughts on ACER?

my sister had one and had lots of problems with the display. I think she had to send it back to the factory to get it replaced twice.

every brand has their horror stories though

Keep an eye on Woot

They've been having piles of refurbs and reconditioneds, sometimes at fantastic prices. Check all their categories, they'll stick computers in all of them, not just 'Computers'.

We need a stickied thread on this topic. This gets asked pretty much every day.

As of last night, I started writing a guide to buying laptops and prebuilt desktops for basic use. Probably should've done this in time for November/December, but oh well.

That would be great for us that are technologically impaired. I will be in the market for a juiced up desktop soon, but I have not the slightest inclination of what RAM, processing speeds, etc., is good nowadays.
