I have a Chromecast and I love it. I love being able to cast from my phone's video player.. I can stream anything from the internet because of this, even if it's not a built-in app. That feature is great for anime lovers, or if you're streaming stuff that's not on Netflix/Hulu/etc... or if you "cut the cord" you can stream football games and such through the phone browser and cast it from the video player. However, burning up my phone's battery life to stream is a bit of a negative. I just keep a charger nearby when streaming.

I haven't tried the others.

it does everything on its own. I dont like the idea of having to use a phone/tablet/pc to control the chromecast. Also the firestick runs xbmc.

as soon as someone can figure out how to sideload a flash browser like dolphin, the firestick will be the shite.

you can control the firestick with your phone if you want... But I cant imagine requiring a phone or tablet to control what shows up on my tv screen adding functionality.

really? My phone is about the only thing I do have with me all the time. Can't remember the last time I picked up a remote.

Eta do you really still use a remote joystick to peck out letters of a Netflix movie you're searching for?

i still love a remote. you know where all the buttons are and you do not have to look down at your phone to scroll through channels and stuff.

The voice search feature on the fire TV app is pretty solid although it only searches amazon content

I'm excited to get my Firestick in. Hopefully mid December. I don't have Chromecast but plenty of my friends do so I've messed around with it.

I picked up a Chromecast yesterday for Cyber Monday at $20. I did a lot of reading on all the devices and the primary complaint seems to be that it can't exist on its own and needs a phone or tablet. I have both of those always laying around and honestly despise remotes, so this should work fine especially for $20.

When Apple finally releases a next-gen TV I will probably buy that one as my full service device.

another issue I had with the chromecast was when I tried to cast video in a browser it studdered and looked like shite. I havent tried loading a flash browser like dolphin on the firestick but that would be a nice feature if someone figures it out. For now I can just use xbmc for streams, although I havent found and channels with bosscast yet.

I haven't experienced this. I do experience that if I cast my phone's screen and try to play a video, but if I cast the video itself, then it's fine.

I have had a Chromecast for around 6 months and really like it. I just got a Firestick the other day and really like it as well. I like the interface of the Firestick more, but overall I would rather have the Chromecast because its ability to cast video from my phone and tabs from Chrome.

If I use my phone to play, say, Youtube on the TV via the Chromecast, is it actually streaming it from my phone? or, for example, could I pull up a youtube video on my phone, cast it to TV, and then leave the house with my phone and go to the store while the video is playing? Thinking about getting one, but for netflix/youtube/etc. part of it, I want to make sure it's not completely dependent on my phone/tablet/laptop in that it needs to use its resources for playback.

This is the part I don't like about the sticks and still rather the full functional rokus/fire tv's/etc.

I don't like the device having to be completely dependent on my phone/tablet. I like to be able to control it from those devices, but I also like for it to be it's own entity after I command it to do something from that device.

Those are native apps that retrieve the video directly and will keep playing when your device leaves the network.

Only the chromecast is completely dependent on a phone/tablet. My roku stick works with my TVs remote, and the amazon fire stick works with its remote. However, the apps are much better for inputting words, etc.
