Too much cgi, great acting, good battles, suffers significant pacing issues.

If it has an actual ending, it couldn't possibly be worse than the the last one.

Viggo Mortensen said PJ wasn't able to use as much cgi in FOTR and instead focused more on character development and interaction, which he preferred rather than a cgi extravaganza. He shot them all at once but the last two films were a mess and they had to do massive amounts of reshoots to complete it. During this process, after which the first film was both critically and commercially successful, they were granted a bigger budget for the reshoots which included much more cgi than originally planned. PJ loves technology and couldn't help himself, though I thought the cgi served to advance the story well and didn't detract from it. The Hobbit trilogy, however, has gotten out of control.
It's really sad to me though, as LOTR is my favorite film series and I had eagerly anticipated these movies for nearly a decade, searching for any updates on the delayed production and being very excited when I read that it was finally going to happen. The movies, while ok-good at times, aren't close to the same level of quality of lotr. I didn't expect it to be quite the same, but with the same screenwriters and production team along with PJ, I did expect better than this. It's very disappointing.

Yea honestly these movies aren't perfect. The subject matter almost requires more CGI than the LOTR trilogy did. Smaug would be difficult to replicate and still use the hobbits in the same shots, purely based on size and intricate detail. Though it does seem every character has gotten their own CGI makeover as well. When I watch these movies I consider the fact that CGI makes them more bright and colorful, which describes the nature of the book the hobbit. It was much more of a bright and good spirited book than the LOTR were. The real action of the LOTR had a much darker colder more realistic feel to them. That seems to be the idea to me behind the extra CGI here. These movies aren't LOTR and they really shouldn't be compared to them

More of the last two?
Great. I loved them.

Same. I've enjoyed the Hobbit trilogy more than TLOTR trilogy.

prediction of how fans will react
Tolkien nuts. Hate it for the likely departures from the book.
LOTR movie nuts, love it no matter how bad of reviews it gets.
Standard movie goers, enjoy it not the best movie in the PJ series. Maybe better than the second but worse than the first.
Critics decent with issues.

LOTR trilogy was better for me. But it's hard to compare with only three movies. I enjoyed the hobbit but so far it's not as good as the LOTR trilogy.

yes I am talking about the hobbit series. For me I liked the 1st better than the 2nd.
It probably didn't help that there was someone in the first group who complained about the movie the entire way back from the movie.
I fit kinda in the first and kinda in the second, so I've enjoyed all of the movies and I own all of the extended versions, but I don't love it no matter the reviews.
Note: I thought the 2nd was better on a second viewing.

the first hobbit movie was one of the very few movies I ever contemplated walking out of. I was constantly checking the time hoping it was almost over. it drug on forever

an hour long battle scene does sound excessive though

maybe I'm wrong about my prediction, who knows.
I'm actually thinking the 3rd will be the best, with all of the fighting. Those were my favorite parts of the LOTR trilogy.

Movies like LOTR, Hobbit, Star Wars, etc, aka massive world trilogy fantasy stories, I will never read critic bullshite. It's just people shitting on things they wish were better.
Too much CGI!!!
You're right we should've genetically engineered walking trees, and Massive battle robots, and elephant like battle riders and had them in an actual battle.
Dumbasses.

Too much cgi,
Even though I enjoyed the film, the first one left this impression with me - the extended cave battle was particularly offensive, bordering on becoming a parody of itself. Looks like he has doubled down on the battle scene in this film.
I never watched Smaug - I guess because I read The Hobbit in middle school and LOTR in high school, 30+ years ago, the stories weren't new to me - the LOTR films were though.
